The Templars live on

Its simple really. The french king decides to not burn the Templars at the stake. How much longer would they stick around with no holy land, and no crusades worth mentioning? Could they prove themselves useful in the reconquest of the iberian pennisula, or would the Templars die out quickly anyway, even without french kindling?

well.
some of the templars did live on in a different form...
but i think they had so much money and power that they couldn't just die out.
the next question is - if the templars weren't executed, would there be a country called France...

Yes, considering France was already a country at the likely time of the PoD.

The Templars would probably just disappear into obscurity and become some small organization devoted to humanitarian works, like what happened to the Hospitallers.

The Templars did have an extensive banking system, no? So without French intervention, maybe they would keep that banking and expand it throughout Europe eventually, leading to earlier international banking.

And same for the Cathars? A religiously divided Europe before Luther?
