The new AH novel
Stonewall Goes West presents the coolest twist I've yet seen on the question of "what if Stonewall Jackson had lived?"
The story has Jackson still getting severely wounded in a friendly fire incident at Chancellorsville. The POD is that he survives his amputation operation, instead of succumbing to infection. He rejoins the AoNV
after Gettysburg, but in time to help Lee win another classic AoNV-style victory over Meade in the Bristoe Campaign.
So, the backdrop is that Jackson is either the second most famous general in the CSA, or arguably tied with Lee for first place. When Davis is casting about for a replacement for Bragg after he resigns, he happily promotes Jackson into the job rather than reaching for Johnston or Beauregard (and then running for the commode...

).
Without going further into the novel, what do you think? Is it realistic to assume if Stonewall Jackson were alive, he would get the AoT after Bragg's resignation? Would he do better in the post than Joe Johnston did?
FYI: the other cool thing about this storyline is that it foreshadows a Jackson vs. Sherman showdown. Lee's principal lieutenant clashing with Grant's principal lieutenant. I can't wait to see how that plays out!
