At the time of the 1956 Hungarian Rising, Zhukov advocated the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Hungary and not intervening against the self-proclaimed new Hungarian government. Kruschev wavered, before finally deciding to intervene. If he had not, the whole history of the Cold War would have been different. The Eastern Bloc countries may have been permitted to follow an independent line. There would have been a major lessening of tensions in the Cold War. Maybe the Soviet Union would have survived. What would have been the impact of a non-interventionist response?
