Madeleine of France, Queen of Naples

Verse 1

On 1458-1460, Charles the Duke of Viana would accept that he would rule Naples as Charles IV in the place of his father as the King of Navarre who will be the King of Navarre till the time he dies, denying the bastard son of Alfonso V of Aragon his own succession to the Kingdom of Naples.

The ascension of the Charles, Duke of Viana would mean a pro-french king of Naples and Sicily and would marry the daughter of the King of France, Madeleine who was considered to be matched to his nephew, Gaston and instead Catherine of Portugal is the one to marry Gaston of Foix to make the Navarrese-Portugal alliance, the marriage of Gaston and Catherine would produce two children, Catherine(February 12, 1463) and Francis(December 4, 1467).

A marriage of Charles, duke of Viana and Madeleine would mean that the ambitions of tthe Valois-Anjou would be dashed completely, the 17-year-old bride would arrive in Naples on January of 1460 and married the newly crowned King of Naples in Naples itself.

However, that does not mean that the house of Valois-Anjou would stop on trying to have the throne of Naples, they would have lots of Plans for themselves and one of that is Nicholas of Anjou should marry Mary of Burgundy, however dashing the ambitions of the Valois-Anjou would mean that the Valois-Anjou would only remain on Anjou and Provence denying them of any power outside of France, however it would also mean that the King of France would no longer have almighty vassals to think about, but that does not mean that the Valois-Anjou would cease to have its own ambitions to the throne of Naples and Aragon.

The French King Louis XI who has just succeeded as the King would be happy that his own son first son Louis had already recovered from his own sickness and he would focus on his intrigues, he would have three further Children; Francis Joachim(July 15, 1459) Anne (April 3, 1461), Jeanne (April 23, 1464) and Charles (June 30, 1470).

Margaret of York, Duchess of Burgundy
Verse 2

Isabelle of Bourbon would give birth to another daughter named Beatrice of Burgundy on May 2, 1461, the birth of another daughter would mean that Charles would have some vigor again and when his second wife, Isabella had died on 1465, Charles would later marry Margaret of York which would mean he would be more vigorous in trying to have another son, however only a daughter would be born in a marriage named Margaret in 1466.

Meanwhile the Valois-Anjou would plot again to get a betrothal between Mary and Nicholas and so does the Habsburgs for Maximilian, however the Habsburg ambitions it would be dashed due to Beatrice being the one being betrothed to Vladislaus Jagiellon just after the death of Isabella of Bourbon, who is a Jagiellonian and her dowry would be the security of the inheritance of Luxembourg itself, the Jagiellonians and the Habsburgs would be enemies due to this.

Charles IV of Naples wife, Madeleine would announce her pregnancy on 1461 and later, Madeleine would give birth to a son named John on May 2, 1462 who would also be the future heir to Aragon, the son is followed by two more children namely Joan(June 2, 1464), Blanche(May 4, 1468) and Francis(November 10, 1470).

There are three men vying for the hand of Mary of Burgundy, Ferdinand, Infante of Aragon who is the heir Aragon in case Charles IV has no issue, Nicholas of Anjou and the son of the Dauphin

Due to the birth of a son for Charles IV of Naples, a betrothal between either Mary of Burgundy and Isabella of Castile would be dashed for Infante Ferdinand whose future seemed gloomy after Queen Madeleine or Magdalena gave birth to a son.

Isabella, Princess of Asturias

Verse 3

“Isabella was born in Madrigal de las Altas Torres, Ávila, to John II of Castile and Isabella of Portugal on 22 April 1451. At the time of her birth, she was second in line to the throne after her older half-brother Henry IV of Castile. Henry was 26 at that time and married, but childless. Her younger brother Alfonso of Castile was born two years later on 17 November 1453, lowering her position to third in line. When her father died in 1454, her half-brother ascended to the throne as King Henry IV of Castile. Isabella and her brother Alfonso were left in King Henry's care. She, her mother, and Alfonso then moved to Arévalo.

These were times of turmoil for Isabella. The living conditions at their castle in Arévalo were poor, and they suffered from a shortage of money. Although her father arranged in his will for his children to be financially well taken care of, King Henry did not comply with their father's wishes, either from a desire to keep his half-siblings restricted, or from ineptitude. Even though living conditions were lackluster, under the careful eye of her mother, Isabella was instructed in lessons of practical piety and in a deep reverence for religion.”

From Freepedia, free encyclopedia

The affairs of Joan of Portugal on 1461 would be revealed which would lead to her banishment to a nunnery although she escaped and eloped with Pedro de Castilla y Fonseca which would leave Henry IV to consider Alfonso as his own heir, however, Alfonso would die on 1463 due to Alfonso dying due to pneumonia leaving Isabella of Castile as his own heir, Previously Charles IV of Naples and Fernando as well as Edward IV were considered as grooms for Isabella of Castile, however due to this Isabella can never be considered as a bride for Edward IV, due to her being the heiress of Castile and named as the Princess of Asturias.

On 1462, the betrothal between Infante Ferdinand and Isabella would be dashed due to the birth of the son of Charles IV of Naples who is the heir of Aragon, this would mean her future betrothal would be either to the son of the Prince of Viana or Prince John of Portugal.

note
No La Beltraneja and the succession of Isabella is secure, however the possibility of Ferdinand's marriage to Isabella goes dimmer as time goes by.

An image of Infante Ferdinand of Aragon

Verse 4

On 1467, the heiress of Castille, Isabella would meet and greet her suitor, Infante Ferdinand of Castile, Infante Ferdinand would propose a marriage with her which she would want to accept however Henry IV of Castile and the nobles of Castile would not accept this and Isabella tried to have Henry IV to have her married to Ferdinand, however the King of Naples and Henry IV of Castile was against it and prevented such marriage.

A match with John, the heir of Alfonso V of Castile and Isabella, Princess of Asturias was proposed as well as with Guyenne, however she would say that she would not be forced to be betrothed to anyone, however the parliament or Cortes of castile would not have her marry anyone that they would not approve for her to marry.

In the end, Isabella of Castile was convinced by her brother to never marry Infante Ferdinand since it would cause conflict with Charles IV of Naples, she was convinced in order to prevent a future war against the Kingdom of Aragon in the future but the end of the marriage plans between Isabella and Ferdinand would spell complete doom for Ferdinand in the end, especially when an alliance treaty between Charles IV of Naples and Henry IV in 1468 would state that Isabella, the heiress of Henry IV should never marry Infante Ferdinand of Aragon.

Margaret of Anjou

Verse 5
On May of 1463, the already deposed queen of England, Margaret of Anjou gives birth to her last child, a girl named Margaret of Lancaster after the escape of Henry VI and Margaret of Anjou to France, this girl would be a well sought bride like Mary of Burgundy, especially when she got older, she would be betrothed to John, the heir to Brittany, while Edward of Westminister would marry Eleanor of Viseu, a marriage which would produce a single surviving daughter named Eleanor of Lancaster b. 1480 who united the Lancastrians and the Bourbons due to her marriage with the Bourbons with Charles, count of Clermont and in the long term a claim for the French for the English throne.

On 1469, a betrothal between Isabella, Princess of Asturias and John of Portugal in order for Castile to be allied with Portugal and to unite the old visigothic Iberia, however, Aragon would wait for its unification, however Isabella would not be that happy about the betrothal due to her and Fernando being separated and the marriage talks being finalized on the end of 1469 since the Prince is young there are many times to arrange the marriage, the marriage is to fix the destroyed ties bought by the despicable bride who Joanna of Portugal, another match is floated and it is Joanna of Portugal and Henry IV, who married on 1469, however the marriage is only on paper and would not produce any children due to Henry IV given up having any children and given his hopes of having children of his own but with Isabella as her heiress but Joanna would use this marriage for her own next marriage.

On 1469, Infante Ferdinand would be betrothed to Anne of France and given lands in Valencia but that was not enough for him as he was lovesick for Isabella of Castile.

Charles IV of Naples would also hate Infante Ferdinand and treat him as a son of a witch which would mean he would distance himself from the court before his ascension as Charles I of Aragon in 1479.

Edward IV

Verse 6
The King of England would dump his premier mistress, the former wife of the Grey, Elizabeth Woodville in favor of Bona of Savoy or Isabella of Castile, however a match with Isabella was not possible as the marriage between Joan of Portugal and Henry IV of Castile did not produce a son and Prince Alfonso died, he did not agreed with the match with Bona due to the engagement of Margaret of York and Charles, duke of Burgundy needed to be dropped.

John I of Aragon and Louis XI wanting allies would send either Marie of Foix or Joanna of Aragon as the possible future bride for Edward IV, Louis XI would propose a marriage between Bona of Savoy or Marie of Foix, however, the match between Marie of Foix and Edward VI would be chosen on 1464.

Joanna would be taken in by Vladislaus II of Bohemia as his bride which would spoil his betrothal with Beatrice of Burgundy who would be betrothed to Ferdinand of Taranto and due to that Margaret of Burgundy c. 1465 would be betrothed to the Duke of Viana.

Marie of Foix would marry Edward IV on Calais on 1465, she would give birth to these children on succession;

Elizabeth of York February 20, 1466
Mary of York August 10, 1467
Magdalene of York March 20, 1469
Edward, Prince of Wales November 2, 1470
Margaret of York April 10 1472
Richard of York August 15, 1473
Anne of York November 2, 1475
George, Duke of Bedford March 10, 1477
Catherine of York August 12, 1479
Bridget of York November 11, 1480

Since Marie is a sister of Margaret, Duchess of Brittany the ties between Brittany would be strengthened, however the marriage between John, the heir to Brittany and Margaret of Lancaster would ruin this alliance.

Isabella I of Castile
Verse 7

The lovesick Isabella of Castile would take time to feel accustomed to Portugal since she has been herself has been fallen in love with Infante Ferdinand and protested about the match with John hewrself.

Isabella, Princess of Asturias and John, Prince of Portugal would be at first not nice with each other due to John being younger than her and would marry in the latter 1470, and since he is a few years younger than herself she would take time to like the match and marry John herself despite staying in Portugal.

She would give birth to children even though she would dislike him when the two first met, however he would find him as a very pious man.

Their children are;
Isabella of Portugal b. October 5, 1472
John of Portugal b. June 30, 1478
Joanna of Portugal b. November 10, 1470
Maria of Portugal b. June 30, 1482
Eleanor of Portugal b. June 30, 1482
Catherine of Portugal b. November 30, 1485

On the death of her brother, Henry IV, Isabella would succeed as Queen of Castile as Isabella I, taking her husband, John and her daughter Isabella with her, afterwards they would arrange a match between the Duke of Beja and Isabella of Portugal in order to secure the succession of Castile and Portugal to the house of Avis if her son, John of Portugal has no children of his own.

Meanwhile, Joanna of Portugal the dowager Queen of Castile would marry John of Anjou on 1474 herself dashing the match between Mary, the heiress of Burgundy and the Duke of Lorraine himself and Nicholas and his brother John would partition their inheritance of Lorraine and Anjou, his older brother would have Anjou and Provence, while he would get Lorraine for himself and wooed the heiress of Burgundy, Mary but she would not be taken by it.

Mary of Burgundy, Dauphine of France

Verse 8

On 1474, Charles the Duke of Berry would die before making the step to actually marry Mary of Burgundy.

On the beginning of 1477 the marriages for Mary of Burgundy and her two sisters have been done, she would be married to the future King of France, Louis and her two sisters, Beatrice and Margaret would be married to the Duke of Taranto and the son of the King of Naples themselves, on the same year Mary and Beatrice would be married to their prospective grooms, Mary to the Dauphin and Beatrice to the Duke of Taranto, the grandson of Alfonso V of Aragon.

Louis XI would arrange the marriage between Maximilian of Austria and Catherine of Foix, a marriage which would be another marriage that is like Edward IV and Marie of Foix on 1477.

On 1479, after the death of King John I of Aragon, Charles IV of Naples would take over and assumed his duties as Charles IV of Navarre and Charles I of Aragon, this would doom any chance of his brother, Ferdinand who flown to the French court so that he would marry his bride Anne of France, however the King of France would deny the match and married her to the Duke of Bourbon and married him to Joan of France in order to pressure the new King of Aragon to give up the territories of Roussillon and Cerdagne or else he will support the claims of Ferdinand to the Kingdom of Aragon which would leave him with only Navarre as his own territory.

Nicholas of Lorraine would end up marrying Sophia of Poland on 1479 due to his failed bid to marry the heiress of Burgundy himself and her younger sister, Elizabeth would end up marrying her old betrothed, Frederick of Brandenburg.
