Such as?

Vladimir's children are his nephews and nieces, or of questionable legitimacy (to Christian eyes).

Been thinking of this too, Im considering of using a Rus Princess, just not sure who is, will continue research

Ill help you out since im good at Byzantine history and also for marraige why dont you try Nikephros Ouranos one of Basil's closest and most trusted generals. Have his daughter marry basil' would that work? Plus unlike ievian royalty Nikephros would be a much better deal considering he was one of the best generals basil had plus he is a byzantine noble in favour with Basil II plus we dont know much about his family so we can say he had a daughter and it works out quite well.

FB,don't forget that Basil is also royalty and he should always have the welfare of the state in mind.I would rather he wedded a Kiev princes and gradually attach and later incorporate the principality into the Empire.

Would it be pratical to try and merge the Kievans and Byzantines?

Better Basil has a wife from one of his generals. Or from an aristrotic family.

Well, if you can find a legitimate Rus princess (not sure who that would be - as stated Vladimir's kids are either illegitimate or Basil's nieces), that might not be bad.

Isn't there a chance of Basil inheriting Kievan lands? Or am i incorrect?

With common religion and greek cultural influence why not? after one or two generations it is probable;it would be better not to forget that Ucranians are
not Russians...

But such a large area, maybe an alliance would be best.

That is how it would start, but thereafter cultural and other well-intended influences will play their part...and don't judge Ucraine by the square kilometres, but the population in numbers, although at that time the actual extent of Ucraine was fluid and the only criterion would probably be language and that with proximity.

The land area is extremely relevant when it comes to "how far a messenger/tax collector/army has to travel".

Constantinople to Antioch is two or three (can't remember) months as an army marches, and that with a decent road system through Anatolia.

Trying to govern the Principality of Kiev(an Rus) while disregarding land area is like trying to check the power of the nobility while ignoring land ownership.

I ll add a few things about Basil II... Despite the fact that he never married he was quite a ladies man and had numerous affairs with women from nobilty and commoners and servants...

Also there were numerous stories about a secret girlfriend Basil had... According to some she was named Arete and was a courtier in Constantinople daughter of a palace official... Rumours mention that Basil had her dressed as a soldier and took her with him in all his campaigns... Same rumour mentions that she died a nun after Basil refused to marry her although he loved her as much as she loved him since they were children... However this has the status of an urban legend or a byzantine gossip and we will never know if this story was true or false...
