The six random counties of Ireland

What if the protestant majorities that were present in Ulster in OTL were more randomly distributed around Ireland, resulting in six non-joined counties voting to stay with the UK?

The Protestants aren't just there by chance. They (or rather their ancestors) were planted there by England and Scotland specifically because Ulster was the most powerful and troublesome of the Catholic states in Ireland.

You could make a case for, perhaps, a plantation in another region instead (say Munster) but Ulster had had that leading position for quite a while, so I don't think it's that likely.

If you want random bits of Ireland staying in the Union, there's always the old treaty (with in OTL the Free State didn't go for, partly because of WW2 and the neutrality policy) about Britain retaining naval bases dotted around the south and west coast.

Not too mention that even in the North Ireland of OTL the protestants are not exactly an overwhelming majority. Spread them around the six regions and youll have no protestant majority anywhere:rolleyes:

Well, you could have larger numbers planted than OTL in the first place. But in OTL, yeah.

There was a plantation in Munster, but it died out (literally).

It's a good WI though.

I did not know that.

Somewhat POD-worthy if we can avoid the obvious strong feelings that might plague such a thread (says I to the man who tries to pilot a Trent Affair course through a sea of circlejerk argument  )
