The turtle's Atlantis series has to be up there.

How 'bout Caliphate? I haven't read it but I heard its basically "Evol Mooslems invading Europe" or some jazz like that.

I've read it....they own Europe as one nation except for the bastion of faith in of all places.....Switzerland! Also the U.S. has incorporated all of North America, while the south has become a super nation as well. Its a very extremist view of the future.

for another blast from the past -

Mirrored skies/burning heavens

US military dictatorship (cue annexation of Canada and everything down to the southern cone)

Resurgent Commie Russia splits Asia with Resurgent Commie China (which nukes Japan into unihabitated crater).

The lack of india is lampshaded as the Russo-Chinese smashing of India.

Oh - and space fleets, cyberpunk mega cities (where do all the people come from, and what do they eat?)

The one cool bit was the version of a space elevator - instead of a true beanstalk, they have something running from very low orbit to just over geosynch - if I remember correctly. Of course, they blew it up in the first book - ah well.

Actually, Turtledove's work is pretty cliche free (ignoring the butterfly effect does not a cliche make). Actually, most of the standard AH cliches exist only because he thought of them first.

Actually, only Draka seems cliche ridden, and that only because it has a highly noticeable wank going on. Since AH is technically fantasy as far as publishers ae concerned, it's hard to find common themes among them.

in pretty wacky ways, if the celestial chinese empire mentioned was any indication.

Oh - and nuclear powered zeppelin-carriers...

er, really?
Hey that's effective for a land war in Asia, it's a bit far for normal carriers that are in the ocean, while also leaves you not needing airbases all over the continent.

Given that they were using them in the philipines, and for troop transport across the pacific & atlantic...

ALso - armored, nuclear-powered, zeppelins seem likely to be a bit on the big and unmanuverable side.

Not sure if that is a good thing for your aircraft carrier, medical ship, logistics chain, and artillery (all-in-one too). Talk about a prime target, and one that isn't exactly going to be up for dodging.

One-nuke-one-carrier would seem to make one heck of a come-back.

Sure - put them in an RTS - go nuts.

But as the backbone for your evil-expansionist-fascist-america...

Granted, there were so many other issues with that book... but the armored plated radioactive balloons of doomy doom always made me giggle
