The short reign of Elizabeth I of England

the Britannica 2008 article on Elizabeth I said:
Elizabeth's resistance to a marriage she herself seemed to desire may have been politically motivated, for Leicester had many enemies at court and an unsavory reputation in the country at large. But in October 1562 the queen nearly died of smallpox, and, faced with the real possibility of a contested succession and a civil war, even rival factions were likely to have countenanced the marriage.

"Leicester" being Sir Robert Dudley, made Earl of Leicester 2 years later. WI the disease had killed her?

Interesting... One of the Grey girls is probably proclaimed queen, or is the Brandon heir still alive ? I'd need to look it up

Spain might well invade and make a play for it themselves

And what about Mary Queen of Scots? Would she be a more serious threat to a Protestant England now?

That's the problem with answering off the top of my head, I forget something! I can't remember enough about what she was doing in 1562 to answer...sorry !

She arrived in Scotland for the first time in 1561 and was forced to submit to the power of the Protestant Lords. Also, they were trying to fix up a meeting between her and Lizzie which the latter feared because of Mary's amazing interpersonal skills.

After "Bloody Mary", I don't see the Protestants inviting another Catholic to become monarch, and could very well point out the Third Succession Act which barred the Stewarts and restored Mary Tudor and Lizzie to the throne.

Lady Catherine Grey was the next in line to the throne and she had a younger sister.
