The Senate Trial of President Richard Nixon

Alright, the basic point of divergence here is that Nixon stubbornly refuses to resign. President Nixon is duly impeached by the House, and the second Senate Trial of an American President is set to begin. When would said trial take place and how long would it have lasted? What would be the dynamics of the trial? I tend to think conviction is a near certainty, but what would the actual margins be? Generally speaking, I'm interested to know what the Senate Trial of President Nixon actually would have looked like? And furthermore, what is the longer reaching impact of this outcome of the Watergate scandal?

I remember reading that there were one or two members of the house who supported Nixon. I don't know if there were any senators. I assume in late September or early October 1974. Nixon is convicted by 98 to 100 votes.

93-7 to impeach is the number I have heard about the time he resigned. With a number this high, once it went to trial, i would expect a 100-0 vote for national unity.

Actually a trial might have changed the 74 elections.

From what I've read the trial might well have gone through the election and the polls showed if it had happened the GOP would have suffered even bigger losses.

And before the anti-GOP crowd cheers, remember that a one party state is never a good thing, even if you like the one party.

So Republican dominance of the 80s, and a Reagan Presidency then...

Wait a minute...

Well we'd have to do a timeline to decide how it went but a Senate trial during the election could have reduced GOP to under 100 in House and under 30 in Senate.

What happens with politics after, who knows.

I hope that this doesn't start a flame war, but what Republican dominance? Other than the Senate for a couple of years, 84-86 as I recall, the democrats still controlled the Congress duriong the 80's.

The boll weevils made everything pretty fluid.
