The Schliefenplan executed as intended Germans invading the Netherlands

Probably posted earlier,

What would the consecuences be if the Schlieffenplan was executed as intended. So with the first, 2nd and third army marching through the South of the Netherlands. May be even more north than shown on the map bellow, with the main forces ingnoring the fortresses of Liege.

How would the Dutch army cope with this attack ( Dutch army was one of the first mobilised armies of Europe and in better shape than 36 years later, never the less far outnumbered)

Would there be some coordination or cooperation between Belgian and Dutch armies?

How would this affect the German advance, would it be faster when it moves through Dutch Limburg and Brabant, and not is hold up by the fortress of Liege?

Suppose the Dutch army retread after some action behind the rivers Waal, and Ijssel, and after some failled attempeds of the Germans, dig in and sit it out.
Or are the Dutch encoraged/pressed the Allies who see opportunities for offensives direct to Germany? (This would mean crossing rivers which halted the German advance.)

Would the Netherlands having some teritorial gain, after a war who will follows more or less the path as in OTL?

Neither the Dutch nor the Belgian Army had any potential to stop or slow down the German advance. (Schlieffen had chosen the Dutch option because it allowed him to by-pass the fortress of Liège.)
But - this option lacked railways, and it forced the Dutch into the enemy camp. - Thus, earlier stop of the offensive into France, and earlier hardship suffered from the British blockade.
Possibly leading to Germany asking for an armistice in 1916.

This has been discussed before and this may be the second time this year. As mentioned by Rast no good would have come from the Schlieffen Plan if executed a planned - if it actually existed at all. Which it didn't.

IIRC, the Dutch were somewhat sympathetic to the Germans, or at least their ruling elite were. I think a far more fascinating scenario would be expanding that into Dutch assistance with Germany against Belgium and France.

Maybe Germany could make some sort of deal with the Netherlands, such as colonial concessions in event of German victory if the Dutch allow them to pass through their territory?

The Dutch provided the Germans with an easy, neutral trading partner. Take this away and you might be looking at a shortage of certain things.

Thanks for the reply.
No doubt this topic is raised times before.
I am just curiuos to know what option or posibilities there would be.
The question is not id the plan would have worked, almost al historians agree the plan is flawed on several points.
No doubt that the much smaller Dutch army will retreat behind the rivers or even further behind the Waterline, after some delaying skirmishes or battles.

The neutrality of the Netherlands as a kind of port to import goods could be taken over by Scandinavian countries as a neutral entrance for importing goods.

I am intersted how a WW1 would evolve if there is a Northen front as well, even if it is not really usefull for the Allies.

How would this affect the relations of the Netherlands with other countries.
If the great war end with a victory, at the end, by the allies, would it result in border changes between the Netherlands and Germany?

german invasion of netherlands

It is possible that the kaiser could offer the dutch queen (wilhelmina) the Flemish or northern parts of belgium. Wether or not she would accept is a whole nother story. I personally think the Dutch army would be a liability for the germans because the netherlands hadne been at war for over 50 years and did not have much of an army (hence thats how they lost so fast in 1940) All German/Dutch colonies would be lost. Japan might gain some of (DEI) dutch east indies thus giving japan future acess to oil.

Emperor of Scandinavia, there is 36 years between 1914 and 1940.

The army of the Netherlands was small but not obsolete and/o ignored for decades in 1914 as it was in 1914!
Other point is empr scaninvia, the Germans make the same demand to the Netherlands as to Belgium!!

I just like to have some change of thoughts of this posibility, even if it is a side show of the Western front.
If there threads or sites who have info on this I like to know, thanks

This is really a no go, it would require Moltke being even more incompetent that OTL. He figured it would be a long war and wanted to keep the Dutch neutral for trade. It was the right decision. Beyond that the Dutch army would have made much trouble for Germany, requiring all 6 ersatz divisions just to prevent them from invading Germany, making the siege of Antwerp that much more difficult, as the British could the resupply and reinforce the city indefinitely, as well as use Dutch assets to keep the Germans out. The sorties by the Belgians could succeed cutting the German supply lines off ending the war in 1914! Especially if the British decide to stick their 3rd and 4th corps as well as territorial divisions into Antwerp and Germany is fucked.

The war ends much sooner, or the Marne ends much closer to the German border...
