“After months of intense campaigning, a uniquely bipartisan ticket, and a long night awaiting the results, it is 11 o'clock and we are calling it. An African-American has broken a barrier as old as the Republic - an astonishing candidate, an astonishing campaign, a seismic shift in American politics. The 44th President of the United States is Barack H Obama.”

“In 2007, it was a difficult decision to join the Republican caucus. My whole life I had been a Democrat, and just a few years earlier I had been the vice-presidential nominee of my party. I won reelection as an Independent Democrat in 2006, after being rejected by much of my party. In 2007, though I joined the Republican Caucus, I did not join the Republican Party. I joined my friend John. John, we may not have won tonight, but it’s been a privilege to be your friend and your running mate these past few months. Together, we set aside that which divided our country and campaigned as Americans. We campaigned not to be President and Vice President of Republican America or Democratic America, but of the United States of America. We are all Americans, and just as we all united these past few months, let’s all unite and congratulate our colleague, Senator Barack Obama, on this historic victory this evening.”
-Senator Joe Lieberman (ID – CT)
“My friends, we have come to the end of a long journey. The American people have spoken, and they have spoken clearly. A little while ago, I had the honor of calling Sen. Barack Obama — to congratulate him on being elected the next president of the country that we both love.
In a contest as long and difficult as this campaign has been, his success alone commands my respect for his ability and perseverance. But that he managed to do so by inspiring the hopes of so many millions of Americans, who had once wrongly believed that they had little at stake or little influence in the election of an American president, is something I deeply admire and commend him for achieving.”
-Senator John McCain (R – AZ)

“There's too little difference between the major party candidates for there to be much riding on this election. It's really only a matter of if you want a huge federal government undertaking grand leftist programs, or if you want a huge federal government undertaking grand rightist programs. Bob Barr. He's the first serious candidate the LP has run since I've been eligible to vote.”
-Radley Balko, Reason Magazine senior editor
“Since 2006, our civil liberties have been under assault. Congress and President Bush have attacked the notion that we are a nation that lives by the rule of law, not by the rule of men. This trend has only continued… accelerated! Tonight
Vice-Admiral Colley and myself and all of us here proved that freedom can and will hit back! The vice-admiral and I will continue to work as members of the Libertarian National Committee. There's a very interesting quote by Dante Alighieri: ‘The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who in times of great moral crisis remain neutral.’ Only the Libertarian Party provides an appropriate forum and an opportunity to work to restore liberty and freedom in America..”
– Bob Barr, (R-GA) and Libertarian Presidential Candidate
“Ron Paul’s supporters were the equivalent of crabgrass. It’s not the grass you want, and it spreads faster than the real stuff. Then they went and voted for Barr. The election was over the day Gingrich began stumping for him.”
– Frank Luntz, Republican strategist
Dean Barkley beats Michelle Bachmann in Minnesota's 6th District
On an already historic night with the landslide election of America's first black President Barack Obama, another small historical bit also occurred. The Libertarian Party Ticket of Congressman Bob Barr and Vice Admiral Michael Colley got the highest percentage of the vote for the Libertarian Party in the party's history. In a way this was a very libertarian election. A great many small-l libertarians supported Barack Obama due to his promise to end the war in Iraq and a not-insignificant slice of Republican voters opted to not vote for the decidedly un-libertarian Republican ticket and vote for Bob Barr. In Minnesota, the anti-war libertarian-leaning Dean Barkley beat the hawkish social conservative Michelle Bachmann. The strongly hawkish and bipartisan McCain-Lieberman ticket underperformed significantly - a smashing blow to a bipartisan foreign policy consensus.

I said that if McCain chose Lieberman as his running mate, it wouldn't end well for the Republican Party and my friend Bob Barr would do quite well. I said he'd break 15%, and when I endorsed him I full well believed that. John McCain picking Joe Lieberman, with an 85% Democratic voting record, was insanity. He nearly killed the Republican Party down-ballot. Bob gave Republicans somebody vote for at the top of the ticket and that held the dam from real catastrophe. As far as I'm concerned, I helped defend the party.
- Newt Gingrich

Conservative Candidate Doug Hoffman wins New York Special Election
Doug Hoffman looking as confused we are
Conservatives, spurned both by an inability by the Republican Party to keep its members in line and dissatisfied with the McCain-Lieberman ticket, have put ideology before party loyalty. Tea Party members are seeing the Republicans' defeat in this race as a win against a party leadership that has spurned them. The Republican base was incredibly galvanized in this race, and there's a real question as to whether this indicates there will be a fight for a soul of the Republican Party or if we'll see more independent conservatives running for office.
- Jeremy Peters, New York Times
I will arrive in Washington in time to vote against this awful healthcare bill.
- Congressman-elect Doug Hoffman
This is the second race in a year in which an independent candidate has won and gone to Washington DC on a promise of working outside of the traditional two-party system. This isn't a coincidence and it's a sign of a real shift in American politics as the voters decide they're fed up with the same old same old.

Well, this is my second attempt at a Gary Johnson timeline (first go
here). I figured it'd be better to start a little bit earlier than I did in that first attempt, and I'm sure you can already see some differences.
