"Universal peace cannot come until justice is enthroned throughout the world. Until the right has triumphed in every land and love reigns in every heart, government must, as a last resort, appeal to force."- Colonel William Jennings Bryan

Just found out that he joined a militia regiment in 1898 to fight in the Spanish-American War. He never saw combat.

However, we have the career of Theodore Roosevelt as a model of what could have been. Roosevelt came out of the war a celebrity although he saw barely any combat.

Is there any way that Bryan could participate in the War in a similar manner? And how would it help his political career?

I think the Spanish American War would have to go worse for the Americans in order to get Bryan's unit into combat. TR's unit barely saw combat and only through considerable influence of his own to get them to Cuba ASAP.

If Bryan does somehow get to see combat it might do him some good and make him a more "real" politician.

Perhaps he takes the White House in 1912 as a "Compromise Candidate"?
