The Rise of the Dragon

March 29, 1854, Tokyo, Japan

Matthew Perry sat at the negotiation table. "I'm glad we have come to a conclusion." Perry said. "I agree completely" said his Japanese counterpart. "I better leave now" Perry said "I need show this compromise to President Fillmore." As Matthew Perry walked out of the room, he overviewed their treaty.

Friendship and peace between Japan and the United States,
Opening of the two ports to American ships at Shimoda and Hakodate,
Help for any American ships shipwrecked along the Japanese coastsand protection for those persons,
Permission for American ships to gather supplies at Japanese ports,
American assistance in Japanese industrialization,
and no treaties of alliance with western powers.

At first Japan was still poor and weak. The Tokugawa Shogunate was still isolating Japan to some extent. The Shogunate used American assistance to build palaces and not factories. Nevertheless, western ideas were beggining to enter the land of the rising sun. Although these ideas were brutally suppressed, the quickly spread. These ideas quickly spread and would soon cause a revolution.

Dragons are China.

Seriously, it's like having a TL with a thistle in the title which turns out to be about England, or with a black eagle which turns out to be about Poland.

Dragons are China.

Otherwise, yeah, it's thin on the ground, but I'll have to wait before I make further commentary. That, and the PoD is vague. Very vague.

What IBC said about Dragons.

Dragons are China......................or Wales.

:)
Actually, dragons are a Japanese symbol as well. And dragons aren't even the main Chinese symbol anyway, tigers are.

To shut up the critics, change the name to "Rising Sun" or somesuch, it still gets the point across.

And I'm interested. It could *possibly* turn the Pacific into a swimming pool for the US, much like the Caribbean was. Sort of like Japan = Philippines post Spanish-American War...

I will be watching to see if this goes anywhere. Beware though, until you hit at least triples in your post count there are those who will look down on you as an outsider. The best re,edy aside from posts is to stun the baord with a glorious TL!

But I have to agree the Title needs work. I mean Dragons can cover so much. Perhaps something along the lines of "Amaretsu Ascendant" "The Rising Sun Triumphant" "Lords of the East" "Glory of Nippon", etc.

Not sure about there being a Japanese symbol. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think you're confusing "there are depictions of dragons in Japanese culture" with "dragons are a Japanese national symbol". The thistle grows in England, but that doesn't make it an English symbol.

If Japan and China shared a national symbol, 1937-1945 would have been a tough time for political cartoonists.

As to dragons/tigers... my Chinese teacher from Chongqing tells me otherwise. Do you have a source on that?

As far as I know, Tigers are symbol of India, and Dragons of China...but Dragon can still be used to describe other Asian Nations...

Here's a fun game...go and look for national emblems, and drink everytime an Eagle or a Lion appear as the symbol of some nation...:p

Once again, my TL had the "Dragon" in the title and there were no complaints...

And I doubt many people knew that Date Masamune was known as the "One-Eyed Dragon" before reading the TL:p
