The resignation of Robert Walpole

In 1717 Charles Townshend, 2nd Viscount Townshend, was dismissed from the government by King George I of England.
This action caused Robert Walpole to resign.
If King George had not dismissed Charles Townshend, would Robert Walpole resign?
 
Can you please bring me up to speed on Robert Walpole. I think I've heard of him.

Robert Walpole, a Whig, was elected to the House of Commons in 1701.
He was appointed Secretary of War in 1708.
He was appointed Treasurer of the Navy in 1710.
After the collapse of the Whig government, Walpole was accused of corruption.
He spent a short period in the Tower of London.
Walpole was made Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1715.
