"Resolved, That it is expedient for the settlers of the coast to organize an independent government. All in favor say aye." The chorus of ayes swept acrross the badly lit room.

"All oppossed, say nay." There was a scattering of nays.

"The resoulotion passes." There was quite a bit of clapping and cheering in the room by the supporters. It was hushed when Methodist minister George Abernethy stood. He was one of the most eloquent speakers of the pro-United States faction.

"I have a new resoulotion to present before you, esteemed gentlemen, which we should discuss at next weeks meeting. Resolved, That if the United States extends its jurisdiction over this country during the next four years it will not be expedient to form an independent government. I yield the floor." The few supporters Abernethy had were silenced by an overwhelming chorus of boos. L. W. Hastings, attorny at law, stood up.

"I propose to the Lyceum that we toss Mr. Abernethy's proposition out." The proposal was seconded by many voices.

"All in favor to throw out Mr. Abernethy's proposal, say aye." The chorus of ayes was deafening.

"All oppossed, say nay." The nay's were more like a whisper.

"I declare this meeting broken up. We shall meet here next week."
