The renaming of Connecticut

The first European explorer in Connecticut was the Dutch explorer Adriaen Block. He explored the region in 1614.
Suppose Connecticut was not named Connecticut. What is the new name?

Hey, a thread about us for once!

We were named after the river, which itself was named after an Indian word that means "upon the long river". Since modern-day Connecticut is a merger of the Connecticut, New Haven, and Saybrook colonies, either of the two could've been the new name.

New Netherlands already taken...

New Netherlands already taken...

Block Island kind of covers the obvious possibility...

New Zeeland/Zealand has been done.

New Holland/Hollandia is covered.

Given New Netherlands to the west, Long Island to the south - Some Dutch version of "Mainland". Prosaic, but simple.

On edit - maybe not.. Google comes up with "Vaasteland" which gets Anglicized to Vastland or Wasteland, depending on who's buying, I guess...

Tot straks

Remember that these names can always be re-arranged or be different. The original name of New Zealand, Nova Zeelandia, was coined in 1645. Block Island was first shown as Adriaen Blocks Eylant in a Dutch map from 1685. (source- Wikipedia)
Perhaps an idea is that it is called Blockstaat/Blocksland or something like that?

Yeah, true, but still

"Emigrate to beautiful Blockland!" just doesn't really cut it...

One can only imagine what it's residents would be called.;)

Connecticut at least as something "different" about it...

Best,

Saybrook for me - a cool name, and it means New Haven's outlook in life didn't win in the merger compared to more liberal Saybrook/Connecticut. :)

Maybe have the Dutch call CT something then when the English take it over they change the name. I mean look around CT it's got a ton of English town names. One of the main rivers is called the Thames.

Saybrook I like but what about Middlesex or New Leeds ?

New versions of other parts of the United Provinces are obvious choices.

New Gelderland
New Groningen
New Utrecht
New Overijssel
New Frisia

for my ASB ATL, i decided on New Canaan. i'll see if i can pull up the posts which gave me the idea.

EDIT: found it
Maybe some of the states founded by religious groups could end up with names inspired by the bible, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusets, Utah and several others could end up beeing things like "New Canaan" (really good name for Utah actually) or something.
i really like that, too! :D i think i'll renamed Connecticut "New Canaan" :)
Given how it was the name of several towns across New England it isnt far fetched either.
