If Quebec/New France was captured and taken over by the British in 1759-63 as OTL but it has been surrounded by other French-speaking polities rather than English-speaking ones down to this day, would the French-Canadians have been as obsessed with national survival as OTL? Until the 1960s Quiet Revolution anyway, would they still have used the Catholic Church as a means of ensuring national survival, and would they still have tied Catholic and French identities?
Similarly, if the Cape Colony was captured and taken over by the British in the early 1800s as OTL but it has been surrounded down to this day by other Dutch-speaking polities from the very beginning all over southern Africa (rather than as a result of the Great Trek in more limited areas), would the Afrikaners have been as obsessed with national survival as OTL?
