In the first century BC, there were a few attempts to annex Egypt and turn it into a province well before the Civil Wars. Let us suppose that one of those attempts succeeds. Yes, this would cause all sorts of problems and butterflies. However, I’m more interested in what might happen to the now-ex-royal family. I would imagine that Ptolemy and Cleopatra (assuming this is near or after their births) would be granted citizenship, like many other aristocrats in annexed territories. How might Roman attitudes develop, for example, of a Cleopatra with citizenship (but no kingdom)?
