THE PROBABILITY BROACH by L. Neil Smith

Wow...he won his own award with this story! :)

Never read it. Is there a link to the web comic?

Otherwise, could be fun if it doesn't take itself too seriously and isn't just anvilicious Libertarian propaganda. And I say that as a libertarian sympathizer.

It is far more libertarian propaganda / utopia than AH. Some good ideas (the parlamentary system described in the book is great) and quotes, and not too bad easy reading - but it is an old book and it shows. Not to mention that the ideas of intelligent, not-uplifted gorillas and dolphins and some physics is totally wrong.

Gallatin's ability to talk enemy armies into joining him are not exactly endearing to the reader. Even people that like Gary Stus can't stand something so blatant, though at least that's just in the backstory.

Considering that it is a libertarian propaganda I absolutely hate it. The moment libertarians try to end my existance by destroying the state that kept me alive I will fight them on the streets !:p
Anyway-the people in the first world actually don't know how good they have-there don't live every minute of their life exposed to possibility of homicidal monkey assasin murdering their neighbourhood in a shootout.

Heh some thought about the NAC

-It bordeline a one party state, all elected official are expected to be libertarians any slight shift toward the other end of the politcal spectrum is frowned upon

-While the NAC conquered the star we don't know what happen beyond their frontiers, I for one think the rest of the world is North American Confederacy bitch basicly providing them with an ocean of cheap labors and being opress and the puppet of the NAC otherwise how come do you think they never acquired other nations in a while :D

You probably need to pay for your murder to be investigate anyway

Didn't we have a massive thread on it a year or two back?

Was Probability Broach the one with Libertarian Texas and Gay Pink Nazi California, or the one where a policeman from a dystopian US meets up with his Libertarian double from Freedomland or whatever?

Nah its Roswell, Texas, but its by the same guy

and California was run by Walt Disney

and in that Libertarian Texas ruled the future

Just went through the first six chapters of the graphic novel, and so far it seems interesting. My only complaints so far are that the author seems to have confused Boulder with Fort Collins. I mean, really? CSU being the university that creates a portal to a parallel universe? Please, if anything CU would create it. :p

I looked through the comic version and felt as if I had no brain while I was doing it. I think I know how the author felt when he was writing it.

In all the comics Libertarians are smart, sexy and come with half-naked women, while anti- Libertarians are ugly, sneer and of course are all stupid.
If somebody is smart he listens to a sentence or two how Libertarians are great and he joins right away to help them.

Now that was even more pain to read at certain moment.

And people in "dystopian" USA have less chance of being randomly murdered on the street then in Utopia. Welcome to Libertarians idea of paradise.

I read it and it sucked. There was a lot of problems that other people have talked about. The whole libertarians are super awesome was pretty annoying. I actually see why people compare this to the Draka. Also I really hated that idea that apes and dolphins only need a translator to be sentient.
What I found funny though was when they mentioned the Nikolai Babbage invented something or other. Really? Did Smith feel the need to cram two cliches (and kind of dumb ones at that) into his book?
Also the evil US torturing the Coke secret out of the two scientists? Was the bad US supposed to Socialist? Really that graphic novel was really fucking stupid. Is it a pretty fair representation of the book?

The graphic novel is a lot stupider than the book. The book is stupid, libertarian propaganda, but no worse really than Ectopia and most of the really stupid shit is in the backstory rather than the actual story, while the graphic novel is just totally insane.

What really chilled me and disgusted at the same time was that in both Roswell and another libertarian propaganda comic on the site(about time travel) there both two cases where the antagonists are put into insane asylum just for telling the truth. This is portayed as something amusing and just. To me it resembled the psychuszka institution in Soviet Union and total disregard for human lives characteristic for totalitarian ideologies. In the time travel comic they also erase whole families from existance and IIRC actually laugh about since the families were descended from a former mayor. Yup you really get comfortable abou libertarian's getting power into their hands to implement their ideas and caring for people.
