They seem Germans, or Austrians, from the helmets, but the frosty and flat landscape reminds more of the Ostfront.

As the comparison photographs of Passchendaele showed, with enough artillery hammering down any landscape would be considerably flattened afterwards, and the picture's background is too blurry to make out anything farther away.

I wondered for a while whether to post this one or not.

But actually this might even be viewed as the paragon of a man-made apocalypse and as such, fits all to well in this thread:

Here are a few I took along the Mississippi Gulf Coast about four weeks after Hurricane Katrina on the first day they re-opened Highway 90 through Biloxi and Gulfport. This is the closest thing I've ever seen of a post-apocalyptic world in person:

Damn, I remember some of those buildings in Detroit back in the day. Masterpieces of architecture. It is such a damned shame that they've come to this.
