I once read that the ten years between the 1988 voyage that reached the Cape and the 1498 voyage that reached India were not entirely idle. Apparently there are some clues that a voyage was undertaken in 1993-4 with a pair of caravels, but these were wrecked before returning. This information was kept secret by the Portuguese, and presumably the secret records were destroyed in the Lisbon earthquake of 1755.
WI this voyage did take place and succesfully return in 1494, would world history be much different?
Another semi-related WI, WI the earthquake didn't destroy Lisbon? Would we know all sort of things that are rumoured, such as the Portuguese discovery of Australia?
