What would have been the affect on WWII if Portugal had abandoned its policy of neutrality? Leaving the question of whether they would join the Allies or the Axis open, would Portuguese soldiers make any difference on any European battlefield?

I'm not sure which side Salazar would have preferred Portugal to pick. On one hand, he was still bound by an alliance with Great Britain. On the other, he was politically closer to the Nationalist regime of Franco and the autocratic governments of the Axis.

If Portugal joined the Axis, I can see its colonies across the world being ripe pickings for the Allies. Maybe even a southern African front would be opened, but again, I'm not sure how willing or successful the Portuguese would be against the Allies.

If Portugal joined the Allies, would that have brought Spain and Franco into the war? If indeed it had, how would a Peninsular front have progressed, would the English be able to keep Gibraltar, and could we even end up seeing an amphibious invasion of the Iberian Peninsula?
