so when the Italians took Rome in 1870, they planed on leaving the Pope with Leonine City in Rome but Pope Pius IX was having none of it, so the Italians occupied all of Rome (even the Vatican itself) and the Popes from then till 1929 pouted till the Lateran Treaty hammered things out and gave them Vatican City (which is a lot smaller then Leonine City) but what if the Italians had much like they did in 1871 with the Law of Guarantees (giving the Popes the rights and honors of a King, and the right to send and receive ambassadors) and unilaterally decided to give Leonine City to the Popes or if Pope Pius IX had been less of an ass and gave up when the writing was on the wall to get the better deal
