The Original Conservative

While I know a lot of you like my TL's, they are quite stressful to do and I sometimes need a break to cool my head, so, enjoy the teaser!.

Thompson Announces Run!
August 8th 1999
Corbis-42-18628753.jpg

"There was a lot of speculation about Tom's run, even from the moment Dole lost, even if it was minor speculation, the big focus was on Dubya Bush, the big name Governor of Texas who had complete Establishment backing, and was holding big leads in polling, this put many people in the considering (Liz Dole, Quayle, that Hatch guy) of not running, but then upstart Senator John McCain quickly rose to prominence as the Anti-Establishment candidate and was proving to be a tough stick to shake in polls, but for the moment, Bush was the clear frontrunner. But in February of '99, while touring New Hampshire, the Governor was hit by a car while crossing the road, he survived, but was in a very bad state and therefore was unable to run, this opened up possibilities for everyone, the race was now wide open

And Tom was nudged into making the announcement, he did it in an expected location, the city of Madison, the speech was nothing special, it was just yammering on about "The Ideals of Freedom" and other stuff like that, and from the start, we were facing a tough battle in polling due to many candidates reconsidering, a tough race was ahead of us---Scott McCallum, Division:The 2000 Election

Is Bush not running? Did something happen to him? If not, I can make some suggestions for scandals or other bad stuff. (Make sure you take note of the SC Primary.)

According to the post just before yours, Bush was severely injured after being hit by a car.

Just a heads up-the update is actually just one big sentence (lots of commas with no full stops). It will be much easier to read if you cut down the paragraph into smaller sentences. I'm looking forward to this TL nontheless, always thought that Thompson was undervalued in TLs.

Chris Matthews::So today, I am joined by Senator Richard Durbin of Illinois to discuss this retaking of Bradley in the polls, nice to meet you Dick.

Chris Matthews:So Dick, what's with the sudden upswing in Bradley Voters?

Dick Durbin:Well, Chris, I'd put it down to the fact that people on the left are getting tired of the same old same old, and with Al Gore as the frontrunner that vote is being tapped into like a goldmine.

Chris Matthews:Well, uh, would you put yourself in that category?

Dick Durbin:Well, yeah, I don't really think I will vote for the Vice-President, I feel that the United States needs a change from Clinton, though I don't want to pick sides on the whole thing (Chuckling)

Don't much about Tommy Thompson. Interesting start. Hope you get a chance to update your other TL's whenever you can.

I think ITTL Gore will not get the same screwjob he got IOTL. Maybe though. He may still lose but hopefully it would be a clean loss.
