Forward: This is something I’m working on during my lunch breaks at work. This is assuming my net book doesn’t crap out on me. The POD is that former US President dies during the River of Doubt Expedition in 1913. I’m going to jump in to the First World War around early 1917 as everything up to that point is more or less OTL as far as battles and the history of Europe goes.

“Following the February Revolution in Russia there was a fair around of worry in London, Paris, and Rome that the Russians would bow out of the First World War. Indeed the Russian people were sick of this war and they wanted out of it. The Provisional Government knew that they needed to get out of the war. But at the time it seemed likely the US would enter this war.”
Then one of the students spoke up instead of raising his hand. Professor Smith had a fairly easy going flow to his class so long as his students stuck to talking about the history he was currently teaching them about. “Professor, that seems fairly ill founded that US would had entered this world war. I mean things between ourselves and Mexico were going downhill fast. So what made the Allies thing the US would be willing to join this war?”
“That’s a fair question Tim. The Second Mexican American War had yet to start at this time, that wouldn’t happen till May 1917. But both President Wilson and President elect Hughes had made it clear to the Russians if they wanted more loans post-World War One that they would need to stay in the war against Germany. Even before we found ourselves in this current three way cold war with Germany and Japan, we really didn’t care that much for either nation. In truth we wanted to see both Germany and Japan cut down to size, but history wasn’t meant to be that way. And remember this was before the Second Mexican American War where the US was willing to bankroll this European War. Does that answer your question Tim?”
“Kind of Professor. But I was wondering…”
Professor Smith cut him off, “Tim don’t you dare bring up Timeline 1917[1]. That is nothing but bad work on part of the author who seem to forget things like pride, logistics, and other key points that goes into the kind of factors he was playing with there. Its nothing more than a halfhearted tried at seeing what would happen if the US entered the First World War. Plus this isn’t a class about Alt History.”
Tim knew better than to speak again. Professor Smith when on. “Indeed in the promise of US loans, and British and French support caused the Russians to get themselves ready for an offensive against the Germans. But days before this offensive started Kerensky learned of the US going to war against Mexico. He knew that meant the US would be cutting off supplies and loans the Russians needed to keep the war going. With this in hand the Russians cancelled their offensive and sent out peace feelers to Berlin to end the war.
Had this been before the US had started the Second-Mexican American war Berlin might of agreed to Russian terms. For peace with the Central Powers the Russians offered up the Congress of Poland and part of the United Baltic Duchy. For the Germans this wasn’t enough. They wanted all of the United Baltic Duchy to become their puppet nations as well as Belorussia and the Ukraine. The Congress of Poland was going to be annexed outright by the Germans no matter what. After a few back in for in Stockholm the two sides finally came to an agreement that neither where happy with but they could live with.
This would be the Treaty of Stockholm. In the Treaty of Stockholm the Russians agreed to give up the Congress of Poland and the United Baltic Duchy to the Germans. They also agreed to recognize the independent of Finland. The Germans outright annexed the Congress of Poland. The United Baltic Duchy was turned into three puppet nations with German kings leading their nations and pro-Berlin in their stands. Finland would ask for a German prince to be their King, but unlike the short lived Baltic states, Finland would be it’s own nation and not a puppet. The Ottomans which as this point were at their lowest point before their recovery the territory it lost in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78. The Austria Hungarians which were replacing the Ottomans as the new weak-man of Europe got nothing out of the peace treaty that came out of Stockholm. But for their part they were happy to get out the war with the Russians.
As the ink was drying of the Treaty of Stockholm the Germans were shifting their forces back east save what they needed for occupation duties to me France and Britain in the battles that would decide the fate of Europe. As for the Russians they were now free to kill each other to see you would rule their nation.
