July 17, 2018: Soviet and Hungarian bombers hammered rebel positions in Syria yesterday. Rebel groups claim that air strikes killed over 50 civilians. The spokesperson for Soviet foreign ministry claims that reports of civilian casualties are "fake news", "greatly exaggerated" and that "internationalist volunteer fighters will continue to defend Socialism with a Human Face in Syria against Islamist reactionary terrorism". Soviet forces have being supporting the regime of Syrian dictator Bashir Al-Assad for more than two year now.

....The Soviet Union's official ideology of "Socialism with a Human Face" exposes itself more as "Socialism with an iron fist" with every passing day....

-Professor Timothy Synder, speaking at Yale University, July 2018

July 17, 2018: ....The SovIndex (Soviet Stock Exchange Index) fell by more than 10% yesterday between 10 AM and 2 PM (Moscow Time), causing the People's Commissariat for Finance to suspend trading for a week, effective at immediately upon announcement....

June 10, 2018: German chancellor Angela Merkel visits German troops posted at the German-Polish border yesterday, Moscow had already condemned the visit as provocative. By the terms of the two plus four treaty (1990) Germany is only allowed 5,000 troops east of the former East/West German border. Merkel, herself born in the former GDR, seems to be trying to assure crucial electoral districts that the German government will defend them in case of renewed Soviet provocations. Merkel's CDU-CSU is at present seen as vulnerable to a vote of no confidence in the Bundestag...

January 30 2016: Chinese President Bo Xilai met today with Soviet president Gennady Zyuganov today in Beijing. The two leaders made a joint declaration on the mutual interest and compatibility of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics and Socialism with a Human Face. Both leaders emphasizes the importance of sovereignty and the importance of economic cooperation between the world's two largest Socialist states. Both made declarations of "defense against imperialism in all its forms".

Richard McGregor: The meeting today between Bo and Zyuganov could not have more contrasted the difference between the two leaders. Bo is rebuilding a cult of personality in China which has being taboo since Mao and is the most powerful leader politically since Mao....

Anderson Cooper: But do you think the bit about "imperialism" is important? We haven't heard that coming from either nations in a public way in a long time.

Richard McGregor: Absolutely, Bo has being turning away from cooperating with the US since his tenure began, he has being aggressively pushing territorial claims in the South China sea. And some of his rhetoric against Japan has being awfully incendiary as to cause alarm in Tokyo. The bit about imperialism is really a public statement on a new Chinese-Soviet partnership against the United States, especially coming on the heels of Soviet-Hungarian actions against Romania and US backed rebels in Syria.

Anderson Cooper: You said that Bo and Zyuganov are completely different....is Zyuganov weaker than Bo?

Richard McGregor: Correct, the Soviet Union had a series of strong General Secretaries in the reform era: Ligachyov, Ryzhkov, even Gorbachev succeeded in driving forward many of his reforms before he fell. But Zyuganov is little better than a figurehead.

Anderson Cooper: Who is really in charge in the Soviet Union then?

Richard McGregor: The answer is quite obvious to anyone paying attention to the Soviet Union: KGB Chairman Vladimir Putin

Interesting that Hungary is playing a major role. Also with Syria, if there's ISIS I guess that means the Iraq war still happens in this TL. The soviets did support the Gulf War in 91 though so its still possible that the Soviets didn't threaten America against it.

Let me tell you something, our leaders are stupid, so stupid. They gave, GAVE money, not just a little money, but billions and billions of dollars to COMMUNIST Russia. To COMMUNIST CHYNNA. What did they do with the money? So much money? I'll tell you what they did: they build factories, great factories, I've seen them myself, they should have being built in America but no. And if that wasn't enough then what did our leaders do? They signed the WORST, the WORST, trade deals that let CHYNNA and Russia sell the things they made in those factories back to us. Isn't that the stupidest thing, I mean how many jobs did we lose, millions and millions and millions. Now Harry Truman, does anyone remember Harry Truman, he had this great idea called con-tain-ment, when did the Democrats get so stupid, Harry Truman was a Democrat but he knew how to make deals. I would never have made those deals, I would have made far far better deals that lets America win on trade.

-Donald Trump, Republican Presidential Primary Candidate, Jan, 20, 2016

...Mr.Trump's characterization of investment into the Soviet Union and the trade agreements signed at the Minsk Accords is ignorant and incorrect. American investment into the Soviet Union yielded handsome returns for American investors, and linking the Soviet Union to the global economy greatly decreased the level of tension between our two countries and was key in Soviet agreement to German reunification. American consumers benefited and still benefit from lower prices and increased variety of goods produced by the Soviets...
