Thatcher is in theory doing everything legally, every single vote she gets gets counted and the people in theory can remove her by voting on the opposition

In theory Irkutsk, Vyatka and Taboritsky (if someone believes that Alexei is alive) are the most legal Russian factions, does it give us a reason to support them?

Thatcher for all her faults is genuinely opposed to the idea of collaboration and wants what is best for her people. Zykov uses democracy as a front for his own power, much as he was perfectly willing to collaborate to remove the Soviet Union from power even if it resulted in the near destruction of Russia.

So does Zykov, he cares about Russia. And ROA was tricked, Hitler in TNO promised them control over the land they liberate.

Speer in Crisis and Borman being honestly pretty smart about Japan.
"The hardest choices require the strongest wills." Let's hope Schmidt has enough cigarettes then.

Vyatka is better than Thatcher, and it is the faction I support.

The other two are non elected dictatorships.

Taboritsky gets his way usually through election (coup as his path to power is extremely rare) and the point was about legality, legally Irkutsk has the best claim to USSR heritage.

I think we are using wrong interpretations due the language barrier =v

Let me try to put on this way

Irkutsk is the USSR, absolutely, the original sucessor to the 1917 government, but we are talking about having the legitimacy as the sucessor state of the USSR.
I'm talking about the legitimacy of the rule, as "The people voted on her, yes she manipulated them with television campaigns, she blackmails the opposition (through legal means like using extramarital affairs, corruption charges and legal prosecution) but all of this is allowed by the law.
Irkutsk doesn't have direct elections with registered voting like Thatcher can be, a elite is in power, and in Autdem Samara you do have registered voting but the parties have a unfair distribution of seats on the parliament, thus it is basically a one party state and the people cannot really change who is in power.

Tbh, Autdem Samara is like Salazarist Portugal, since Portugal under Salazar was (in theory) a democracy until 1952, you had electoral fraud to make the People's National Union to increase their margin of their victories, but by 1952 Salazar had been in power for soooooo long that the opposition won, thus he ended elections and remained in power. Maybe the same happens with Zykov, his party can lose somewhere in the 1980s and he goes "Well, we tried" and ban elections.

Let me put this straight. You're talking about democratic legitimacy of the govt, but this is not only legitimacy which can be used by the government to justify it's existence. Look at Tabby - are his actions in accordance with law (if we assume that Alexei still lives)? Yes, Alexei is undisputably Nicholas's legitimate heir under Pauline Laws. Does it give Tabby an excuse?

I'm looking at what the people finds legitimate, not what the government finds legitimate

I have read that discussion over on Sufficient Velocity, and that user's entire argument against both OTL and TNO United States basically comes down to the same line of reasoning along the reasoning of 'AmeriKKKa is an evil, genocidal empire founded by a bunch of racist rich white male landowners on stolen native lands and built on slavery. The country is literally no different from Nazi Germany except for better PR' that I have talked about from earlier when discussing the people that unironically support a Gus Hall presidency.

The counter-argument (Which, BTW, I agree with) can be summerized as:
(1) Yes. America was a nation founded upon conquest and genocide. But they have stopped doing that centuries ago (For OTL)/slightly less than a century ago (In TNO).
(2) In the TNO world, they are fighting against literal Nazis who ARE actively doing those things.

In which that guy's response being, 'So? The only reason that the Americans stopped their genocide against the native in their version of Generalplan Ost was because they have succeeded in stealing the land from the indigenous people. And no matter how much time have passed, the current regime sitting in Washington in both TNO and OTL is a continuity of the exact same government that enacted Manifest Destiny'.

I find it quite ironic that if I understood one of his posts correctly, that user came from Russia, and someone could equally make that augment against his country both in OTL and TNO as well (Minus the continuity of government part... Well, maybe unless you are Kemerovo under Rurik :p ).... After all, what exactly is Siberia but THEIR verison of Lebensraum? Or if you go back far enough, apply the same logic to any Russia land outside of the original Kievan Rus... What? Just because you have stolen those land by conquest back in the 16th/1st century instead of the 19th century like the Americans did with theirs, what you did was somehow OK and does NOT make you just as bad as the Nazis? Does that make even the more blessed and benevolent Russian unifiers as bad as say a Germany under facist Speer or Bormann?

The same line of reasoning applies to China. And indeed, I HAVE seen radical circles online saying that the entire concept the Chinese Huaxia (華夏) nation and civilization is illegitimate, and that everytime the country has been strong and powerful historically such as during the Han and Tang dynasties, it was the result of them going out and conquering or vassalizing the 'barbaric' peoples around them... Hence 'China' needs to be destroyed as a concept in order for there to be peace in Asia, otherwise they will just inevitably become a regional imperialistic hegemony that bullies nearby nations such as Korea, Vietnam, Mongolia, etc... Thankfully, I have yet to see anyone using that line of reasoning to advocate for the idea that therefore China deserves to lose the Great Asian War against Japan, and have the Nanjing Massacre 2.0 enacted against them on a nation-wide level.

It reminds me of this ad that Nando's made about South Africa:

The gist being that if you go back far enough, EVERYONE was a 'foreigner'/'coloniser'/invader' at one point or another. And while we must not forget about our history, being overly focus on that sort of thing does not help anyone in the here and now.
Ok, apologies for getting back after so long, I wanted to respond to this a bit earlier.

So that person on SV. He takes a rather "Ulyssian" view of the TNO!Cold War, informed by what he knows of canon and just how bad the Nazis and the Japanese are in our reality and TNO's. Bascically for those who don't know, Ulysses is that character in Fallout New Vegas that views all factions as corrupt and self-destructive, and the only solution is to reset the world. That person's idea is that the world has been so tainted by evil and hatred that the only way to actually solve things might be to mercy kill the world and start over, which ironically enough, is the MO of those that are already so tainted by evil and hatred in TNO in the first place(except they don't want to mercy kill the world, they want to wound the world as hard as possible on the way out).

But the difference here is that of the three powers, one power can genuinely get better led by genuinely decent leaders, while the other two are, in their less evil routes, led by powerhungry opportunists that just knew where to go when the wind blows if they ever become "less evil". Even if decent people like Schmidt takes charge, they will still preside over a society heavily marred by evil to greater extent than the US and will have to dirty their hands even further when the victims of their nations atrocities start knocking at the doors.

To make another Fallout analogy since I used the term "Ulyssian", there are differences between the NCR or a purely good wild card ending headed by the player/courier vs. the legion that makes the wasteland worth saving.

Like, as someone way to your left, I will completly disagree with you that the mistreatment and outright genocide of native Americans in the US and Canada stopped in the present, but in-game one power can genuinely become a democracy, even a left leaning uber-progressive one, while the other two, in the remote % that the reformists aren't total opportunists take over, would be authdem at most and have to dirty their hands by dealing with nations victimized by their nation seeking to set things right. And this isn't getting into the point that the US, while doing this for completely opportunistic purposes, can end up funneling aid into various leftist groups worldwide. Which in turn makes it's position weaker when the Second Cold War begins, especially against a US that has now created a shitton of new enemies that wants to jump on it now after using OFN aid for their own purporses.

After all, despite being a capitalist, Lincoln was supported by Marx because at that point in history, the Bourgeois had a progressive role to play. I've seen it stated on a leftist PDX FB group that TNO US is less malevolent than OTL because of the fact that in the TNOVerse at least liberal democracy could play a genuinely progressive role in the fight against fascism.

We must also remember that TNO is not a "dunk on America mod" because while Panzer is critical of US imperialism, he isn't a "Death to AmeriKKKa" sort of person, he has had grievances with that crowd and the tankie crowd and supports AOC and the Squad, whom the Tankies/Greyzone types hate(even to the point of Ben Norton taking quotes and photos out of context to make it look like AOC supported the Bolivia coup, when her actual voting record on that was more nuanced than "go US imperialism go").

At the end of the day Panzer is a demsoc that wants America to get better, rather than someone who views America as irredeemably tainted by settler colonialism. I don't fully agree with his views on things and on the left but it's his views.

Sure canon US is more cursed and the Russian poster is informed by what happens in canon, but to be honest, after so many nonsensical and poorly written conflict ball laden happy ending overrides in many popular franchises, having one of the more "mediocre" ends to TNO(read: bad by our standards) segway into the sequel mod works better than a massive asspull happy ending override where Sablin goes tankie in the timeframe between TNO2 and TNO3 or Harrington is revealed after some ass pull to be a crypto fascist.

fun fact: Intrestingly enough that poster on SV himself does not necessarily view America as irredeemably tainted by imperialism, that vitriol is saved for Britain.

Saw people discussing Samara a few pages back! Thought as one of their (former) writers I'd chime in.

It's true that Oktan's early game deserves/deserved a light rework; he was changed from being a wehraboo and actual collaborator to being a slimy fascist smuggler in development. A thing I wish I had put more time on was make clear that the fascist in his faction are dismayed that Oktan is more busy filling his bank account than building a ""cool fascist republic""

As to Bunyachenko and Samara, strangely despite having written them so much I don't really know what to think of them. In a way for me Zykov's Russia is more the story of his country than of himself. A country in which a cruel injustice has happened: Western Russia, one of the most likely region to reunify the country, has been taken over by despised collaborators. Now a democracy is rising, but an unjust one. Zykov's path is (for me) the story of doing the best with one's circumstances. Just as once the ROA collaborated with the Germans and treacherously helped defeat the WRRF, so an entire country is forced to grit their teeth and work with a system they dislike. In a way Zykov's democracy is genius because it gives people enough hope that things will turn out for the better that they can swallow their unease at working with his Russian Republic.

For what my opinion is worth,
Zykov really is a democrat. I think he sees himself as on the golden path, between the Army squashing the young democracy in the crib, and populist bolshevik agitators trying to ruin everything. Like a modern day Robespierre, he thinks only he can see the golden path straight ahead. By removing elections as a factor through a mixture of gerrymandering and pork barrel spending, he hopes to have time to arrange everything through intra-party maneuvering.

As to Bunyachenko, I think I pity him as I would pity an animal gone rabid. He would do almost anything to redeem himself and clear his reputation as a traitor but trust his fellow Russians with power. In a way he ironically lacks Zykov's greatest asset, the ability to talk to the people. Bunyachenko has nothing to give to the Russians but hard work . The nation may live to see a future free from German domination, but I don't think Bunyachenko will ever see a day where people thank him for what he's done. His program to build housing, give food to everyone, jumpstart education, all of these will improve the life of the average Russian. But as seen in the event where security forces gunning and beating down union activist is seen by the state not with horror, but with dismay at the thought of lowered industrial prosperity, Bunyachenko's Russia is a cold and unfeeling place. Not a country where one would love the president.

Ultimately when starting to work on Samara I was apprehensive of casting a judgement on these characters (well, maybe I can feel safe in judging the Oktanites ahah). As despicable as the collaborators are, would I have done differently to escape a German PoW camp? I don't think either Bunyachenko or Zykov deserve redemption. Nor does Vlasov. But I think of the soldier in the opening events who was drafted by the Germans and hasn't seen his family in years, and I hope that he gets to go home something of a hero one day. I hope he and his comrades can return home, from where their destiny was stolen from them by Germany.

One of Samara's overarching theme for me is being forced by life to make hard decisions, and this is why ultimately Oktan's path of facility is one of the most terrible in Russia. It's about a thousand and one ROA officcer giving in to the temptation to say "If I'm damned I might as well take my prize" instead of fighting for the other two or deserting.

Something I REALLY like about the new superevents is how they seems to be more, well, favourable to the faction who wins

Mikhail Tukachevsky unification one for example, the quote doesn't borderline ruins your whole gameplay anymore

Also gotta love how a number of the reunification events got more sound effects. A number of them even more celebratory with fireworks and cheering that helps make up for the tact that HOI4/TNO can't support videos in their super events without making the game crash or something. Zhukov's event sounds ever more triumphant/epic than before.

In contrast the sounds for Vagner's Brotherhood, Amur, Tabby's new endings really help ramp up the horror of what you've unleashed unto Russia.
