The Neuchatel succession

In 1707 the brand of the Bourbons ruling the principality of Neuchatel went extinct, and the people of Neuchatel had to find a new ruler. There are around 15 candidates I think (couldn't find any lists, that would be very helpful)....... but they ended up chosing Frederick I of Prussia.

The candidate had to be Protestant, and had to come from a somewhat powerful (but preferably far-off) state.... so who do you think could be chosen to rule Neuchatel besides a Prussian?

Who could meet the qualifications at that time?
The list wouldn't be that long, IMO.
Elector Georg of Hannover (later King Georg I of Great Britain)
King Frederick IV of Denmark
King Charles XII of Sweden (probably not a real possibility - at war with to many people)
and that's about it...
The House of Orange hadn't a real strong pretender at that time...

the House of Orange is how Frederick I pressed his claim... so they might be able to find someone.

what about Wurttemburg or Saxony?

Württemberg at that time was still to small - (IMO) - it did gain most of its territory - and raise in status to electorate and ultimately Kingdom - only almost a century later...

Saxony - would have been a good choice, if not for Augustus I converting to catholicism a short time earlier just to become King of Poland - staying protestant to get the title of Prince of Neuchatel instead, would of course be much a more valuable prize....;)
