The mighty Turkey

Benjamin Franklin suggested the the national bird for the United States be the American Turkey. Could this have beaten the Bald Eagle out some how? What possible affects could this have down that road? Just curious.

Ben dies and the other members of the Continental Congress decide to honor him by making the Turkey the bird of the new nation .
Everybody proceeds to mock the country which is never taken seriously .This leads to the country developing nuclear weapons as a way of getting back at all the many nations that poked fun at their bird being the same one eaten at thanks giving .:D

Well the Eagle symbol could become to attached the Hessian Hussar mercenaries that work for the British in the revolutionary war. This stigma plus the fact other countries also have eagles as there symbol causes the congress to chose the most american of bird the Turkey.

The plus side is that 250 years later when an Australian sits down to eat a kangaroo steak and somebode moans that no other country eats their national emblem they just need to say the magic word THANKSGIVING.

June 6, 1944: The 82nd "All American" Airborne Division is joined by the 101st "Gobblin' Turkeys" Airborne Division in Operation OVERLORD.

For obvious reasons, none of the men of Easy Company, 2nd Btn, 506th PIR, make much ado about the shoulder patch.

Say what you want, at least the shoulder patch isn't a naked guy with a javelin on a flying horse.

Best,
