When Fredrik Wahlgren grew up noone would think he would be a leader of anything. His teachers belived he would end up as a janitor or someone that worked for a meager income. Some teachers belived that he would be an alcoholic as an adult. He did not have a easy time growing up. His father became a alcoholic and he was raised by his mother that worked as a part time worker. They lived at first in a run down apartment on Skallberget before his mother remarried when Fredrik was 9 and they moved to a appartment in the area of Haga. Fredrik worked hardin school to get a decent education and get a job were he could support himself. Since he came from the working class and always discussed politics at home it was more or less given that he would either become a politician or a activist. At age 12 he joined the Socialdemocrats. Fredrik was outspoken how Socialdemocrats should work to attract the young voters and the older more experienced members thought that his ideas had some merit, but he was seen as to young and many did not take him serious. At the same time he was the spokes person for the class and his mother was class parent. At age 15 he was approached by the local SSU board and asked if he wanted to be leader of SSU. In 1989 he was elected to lead SSU.
When he selected what he would read in gymnasiet(high school) he went with social studies at Carlforsska becauce that the education would open up a lot of paths for him. When he started at Carlforsska he quickly became the spokes person for the class in important matters. He also got many friends and formed a sort of entourage with others in the same class.
