Throughout it's history, the United States of America has experienced a number of crises, whole decades have been engulfed by turmoil, world wars, economic depression, and civil strife so great it entraps the entire nation in war and in the end, the Union stands strong through it all. The Union stands tall and strong because the American Dream, whatever you choose to see it as, is alive and well. The American Dream means many different things to many different people, the ability to make something of yourself, the ability to work your way up out of poverty, the ability to speak freely and ultimately, the ability to be American. When the "peculiar institution" of the South tore the nation apart, it was the American Dream that brought the Union back together. When President John F. Kennedy was assassinated on the 22nd of November, 1963, it was the American Dream that ultimately bound the nation together in grief. This story seeks to center on the latter of these - and explore a new world. A world where the nation felt that it did indeed need Nixon in 1960, a world where a new Vice President binds the nation together in the fight for equal rights for black Americans, and a world where a different assassination takes place - one just as shocking and horrifying as ours, and one where the American Dream brings the nation together once more, as it has done since 1776, and as it will continue to do. With the stage being set, the Marigold Era of the United States of America is about to begin.

There are several PoDs for this timeline, first and most obvious from the title card is that Richard Nixon chooses Senator Everett Dirksen as his running mate in 1960. Second is that Harry Byrd and Strom Thurmond openly run as opposition candidates to both JFK and Nixon, as both tickets seek to expand civil rights. Kennedy, who still argues for the expansion of civil rights, loses millions of votes to Byrd in the South, but performs admirably in the North, taking some of the bigger, more liberal states. Nixon's stance on civil rights is only slightly less liberal than Kennedy's (Nixon is persuaded by Dirksen to take a stronger stance in exchange for serving on the ticket). Nixon and Dirksen spot openings in several southern states, Tennessee, Texas, and Kentucky primarily. After a heavy campaign season in the rest of the nation and in these three states in particular, Nixon manages to pull ahead of both Kennedy and Byrd, taking Tennessee and Kentucky by a respectable 7% in both cases and Texas by just under 7000 votes. Kennedy wins a surprise victory in California but loses in the narrow contest in Hawaii, which puts Nixon at exactly 269 electoral votes, and putting him in the White House.
