January 12, 1964 the Zanzibar Revolution erupts with the overthrow of the Sultan of Zanzibar and would herald the mass killings of thousands of Arabs and South Asian peoples living on the island. Lead by John Okello and Abeid Kurame the revolution had clear Communist ties and was a fight to eliminate the stranglehold the Arab minority had over the politics of the African (Swahili) islands of Zanzibar and Pemba.
British troops in Kenya were put on standby to interveane should the revolutionaries attack British citizens, up until the next day nothing really happens until the arrival of the U.S.S. Manley, a US Destroyer. Having been authorized by the US Ambassador to evacuate Americans on the island, the Manley docks at Zanzibar town harborwhere it is met by several armed men, the Revolutionary Council was not notified of the Manley's intent or permission to do so. Some of the reolutionaries either hopped up on the excitement or fearful that this is an attempt by the Westerners to stop the revolution fires on the Manley's crew killing two and wounding several, leading to a retaliation fire from the Manley's support guns.
Word of confrontation quickly spreads and the bloodthirst of the revolutionaries turns on the European inhabitants, strictly against the orders of Kurame but Okello already unstable goes against and calls for a righteous crusade. British forces in Kenya mobilize, and take Zanzibar Airfield.
What are the wider political fallout for this and what is likely to happen?
