The Manchurian Question

Manchuria has been the site of much conflict in the twentieth century, from invasion by the Japanese to some of the most serious border conflicts between Russia and China during the late 1960s-early 1970s.

The question here is, is there any way that Manchuria could become an independent country in its own right-perhaps after World War One-so that such conflict could be avoided? Or perhaps Manchuria could remain under Russian influence as part of the Soviet Union, or...well, you see the question...

I think the best chance for Manchurian independence would be after ww2, if the red Army can move fast enough to kick the Japanese out and occupy it they might be able to make it an independent nation.

There are two options for making Manchuria independent: one is having Zhang Zuolin realize that a secure grip on Manchuria alone is better than an insecure one over all of China, and to consolidate his local rule instead of expending his resources in futile wars against the other warlords. With some deft diplomacy, he could have the USSR, Japan and Nationalist China realize that an independent Manchuria is a useful buffer between each other.

The other option is Jiang Jieshi not trying to go after the Communists in Manchuria. Within a couple of years the place would become a Soviet satellite as the Manchurian People's Republic, with the less pliable PCC leaders purged and replaced by more cooperative ones.

I prefer this option. If only because a Zhang dynasty and an independent Manchuria would be sweet.

Hmm, perhaps if the Fengtien Clique had declared an own state and perhaps got support from Japan or the USSR. It's a long shot, and the state would probably not survive WW2.
