The Mad War

Currently, I'm working on a TL involving a POD in which Edward IV survives until 1492. Now, my question is, how would the *Mad War play out in this scenario?

Assuming Louis XI dies in 1484 and Charles VIII succeeds under the regency of Anne de Beaujeu as in OTL, Louis, Duke of Orleans (OTL Louis XII) is probably still going to rebel and claim the regency. So, my question is, how would Brittany factor into this? With the future Edward V still betrothed to Anne of Brittany, Duke Francis II already has his policy goals met of maintaining the independence of his duchy, so he'll have no need to betroth her to Louis as in OTL. Will he still ally with him and rebel against the regent? If so, I assume England will support him?

Also, if I'm not mistaken, it was only the after OTL Treaty of Sablé in 1488 that Francis was forced to agree that Anne would not wed without the approval of the French Crown. So, if Edward V and Anne are to wed, will France have any grounds to go to war to prevent the union? I could see Anne de Beaujeu supporting the claims of Jean de Brosse, Count of Penthièvre against the English after Francis' death.

What does everyone think?

If Louis XI dies in 1483 as OTL, and Edward IV is still alive, I can definitely see an alliance between Orleans, Brittany, and England. Edward IV doesn’t impress me as someone committed to the long term conquest of France but I can see him helping Louis of Orleans become regent for Charles VII. Louis could use his powers as regent to grant territories in France to Edward. Perhaps Edward could promise his daughter Elizabeth to Louis if Louis were able to get a divorce from his wife. Louis of Orleans and the regent, Anne de Beaujeu, did not get along in OTL so in this scenario I can see their dispute still turning into a war. Edward could form a coalition of himself, Orleans, Brittany, Lorraine (Rene II would definitely want to take the lands that his grandfather held in France), and Maximillian of Austria. I see Edward’s main goal being to secure Brittany for his son. With the help of England, I could see Louis prevailing over Anne in this scenario, with the main result of the war being an increase in the power of the French nobility.

Interesting. It's worth noting, though, that at this point Maximilian is still bound by the Treaty of Arras, with Margaret of Austria a virtual hostage at the French court as Charles VIII's child bride (who received Franche-Comte and Artois as her dowry). Do you think he'll invade France in support of Louis in anyway or remain diplomatically neutral until one side seems to be gaining the upper hand?

In OTL, the Treaty of Arras did not prevent Maximilian from taking part in the Mad War. In June 1486, Maximilian invaded northern France but retreated back after being repulsed by Marshal de Esquerdes. Keep in mind that the Treaty of Arras was ratified by the Estates of Flanders without even consulting Maximilian. I do not know the composition of the army Maximilian invaded France with in 1486 but I assume in your scenario he would still have the means to raise a formidable force. Edward IV had an agreement with Maximilian to betroth Anne of York to Philip the Handsome in OTL. In TTL, they may actually complete the betrothal as part of an alliance to attack France. I definitely see Maximilian trying to reverse the terms of a treaty he wanted no part of in the first place.
