The Light Brigade does what Raglan intended

WI The Light Brigade actually does what Raglan intended it should and attacks the batterries that the Russians were attempting to move rather than those which were dug in and fully manned? (Apart from at least changing Tennyson's poem!). I can't see it materially changing the oucome of the Crimean War but it might alter Raglan's reputation as British Commander.

Well, it certainly would change his reputation and (to some degree) that of British leadership in general. It might also have changed the outcome of the battle, which cost the allies some of their outer lines and seriously damaged their morale, while improving Russian morale and enabling them to launch a subsequent offensive.

The practice of sale of commissions might have lasted a while longer. I can't see it lasting any longer than immediately after WWI, and that's pushing it.

The Russian troops on the Causeway Heights were not attempting to move. They were not attempting to withdraw the spiked captured guns, they had 32 gun of their own, with full crews, supported by 11 infantry battalions. Acrsss the Valley on the Fedoukine Heights, the Russian had 14 more guns backed by 8 infantry battalions. The historical Charge attacked the weakest part of the Russian position (only 8 guns and 200 men, backed by cavalry) across the ground most suitable to a cavalry charge.

Attacking the Causeway Heights,as Raglan wanted, had even less chance of success and would have left Russian cavalry at the east end of the Valley that could have counter-charged the Light Brigade when it retreated.
