The Legend of the Barbarossa
A Marriage that Changed History
Soon after her second husband's death, plans for a new marriage for Richeza began. Apparently, she was betrothed to Raymond V, Count of Toulouse, by her cousin the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa around 1166, at the same time, the now Countess Douce II of Provence was engaged to the future Raymond VI. Count Raymond V wanted with this engagement to become more closely to the Hohenstaufen dynasty and took full control over the County of Provence, Raymond V of Toulouse had already married Richeza of Poland and her daughter, Douce II of Provence is already betrothed to the son of Raymond V of Provence and with the help of Emperor Frederick Barbarosa, however the County of Provence is controlled by Alfonso the Chaste of Aragon and they asked for help in order for the County of Provence go to its rightful rulers...however that would not be too easy.
Frederick Barbarossa made an expedition against Aragon on 1180 to aid his ally Raymond V but this time Alfonso the Chaste asked the King of England, Henry II to help him in his war with Barbarossa, in this time France cannot do anything against the Aragonese and England due to France being under regency at that time and cannot intervene against the English and Aragonese forces but the forces of the Holy Roman Empire was able to win the war against the English and installed the rule of Raymond V of Toulouse to the County of Provence and Raymond V confiscated the Aragonese lands in Toulouse like Gevaudan.
The first child of Raymond of Toulouse and Douce II of Provence is Alphonse born on 1182.
The survival of Frederick Barbarossa
Frederick of Barbarossa woke up on June 11 1190, his troops were very organized thanks to him being a really good leader, he was a very successful military strategist and a soldier and for that reason he was able to defeat the Turks and make them stay away from the Kingdom of Jerusalem, however Frederick Barbarossa is not able to completely defeat them but he was able to keep them at bay, Barbarossa was happy about his accomplishments in the Kingdom of Jerusalem. On his way to the territory of his brother-in-law Henry of Saxony, Richard I of England was captured shortly before Christmas 1192 near Vienna by Leopold V, Duke of Austria who accused Richard of arranging the murder of his cousin Conrad of Montferrat. Moreover Richard I of England had personally offended Leopold by casting down his standard from the walls of Acre. Richard I of England and his retainers had been travelling in disguise as low-ranking pilgrims, but he was identified either because he was wearing an expensive ring, or because of his insistence on eating roast chicken, an aristocratic delicacy, Emperor Frederick took advantage of this situation and used it against both Henry of Saxony and Richard I of England.
In 1193, Eleanor of Brittany was engaged to Frederick son of Leopold V, Duke of Austria, as part of the conditions to release of Richard who had been taken prisoner by the Emperor. However, when she was still on the way there with Baldwin of Bethune the next year, the marriage took place on October 4, 1194, the marriage meant the release of Richard I of England on November 1, 1194 and ending the feud between the Plantagenets and the Babenbergs, Joanna of England gave birth to a son named Henry on December 3, 1194, later on Philip Augustus would return to France, while Richard of England was married to Berengaria of Navarre the future heiress of Navarre, she gave birth to a daughter named Eleanor on 1195 who is Betrothed to Lawrence of Este, a relative to the Guelphs, the second son of Azzo VI of Este.
