The Last Crusade: Europe Retakes Constantinople

Constantinople.

There are several problems with this. Would the local Greeks welcome a return to Latin rule? Would whatever power that holds Constantinople regard the Greeks as heretics?

A post-Lepanto crusade 120 or so years later, led by a Spain rich with the gold of the new world, and including Austria, Portugal, Genoa, Venice, the lesser Italian States, and France might have a shot...but good luck making that coalition work!

Following Lepanto victory Don Juan of Austria had plans to proceed to Constantinople but this plans never materialised due to severe disagreements between the oalition forces...

It would be interesting to throw in mini-PODs such as Edward IV living longer and marrying his daughter to James IV. How about a joint Anglo-Scottish crusading army as part of the overall force ?

Best Regards

"Better the Turkish Turban than the Papal Tiara"
In a word, no. The Ottomans protected the Patriarchate and the Eastern Orthodox Faith, and even called themselves the Roman Empire. I doubt the Romans of the Balkans (for they still called themselves that until the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries) would be highly unlikely to welcome a bunch of barbaric westerners who would persecute and harrass them far more than the Ottomans ever did.
