I just saw a preview for The Lake House. From what I gathered, it's an upcoming romance film starring Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock. Here's the interesting part: they both live in the same lakeside resort town, but two years apart. Does anyone know if the movie involves AH, or takes into account AH principles like the butterfly effect?

Is it based on a short story? There's one I vaguely recall that deals with a lakehouse that has a portal to alternate histories or past times, I forget.

I saw the trailer for this a while back and remember thinking at the time that the idea of a time vortex inside a mailbox is quite possibly one of the strangest cinematic maguffins that I've heard of.
I'm actually pretty interested in this movie, specifically because of the time travel aspect. There's a scene in the preview where Reeves plants a tree for Bullock and, two years later, its grown really big.

From the trailer I saw, it didn't appear to deal with time travel. I'm inclined to believe that one person or the other simply found a pile of the other's letters.
Well, not time travel in the conventional sense. More like one person (in this case, Reeves) being able to alter some aspects of future history (where Bullock resides, two years in the future), using the mailbox at the waterfront house as a communications portal between the time periods.
There was a movie are TV a few years ago, with a similar premise, but it dealt with letters from a person in the 19th Century to a person in the early 21st. The means by which this occured via a mailbox in a building slated for demolition.

Sounds similiar to "Frequency" where a cop finds out he can talk to his fire fighter dad who died in a blaze years ago through his dads old short wave radio that his dad happens to be using years in the past.
He warns his dad and his dad avoids the deadly blaze.
But the dad surviving also causes a future serial killer to survive as well. One the son is trying to track down in the present and who begins stalking the cops mother in the past.
