NO.10, DOWNING St
“…The Prime Minister Tony Blair has today announced his intention to resign after ten years at No.10. During a speech at the Trimdon Labour Club the Mr Blair announced that he intended to resign as PM sometime in June this year, handing over power to whoever succeeds him as Labour Leader. With this announcement comes a snap leadership election within the Labour Party, the Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown and the Foreign Secretary Peter Mandelson are currently the most likely candidates to stand. In other news-”
Gordon Brown, Chancellor of the Exchequer, turned off the television. Leaning in an old rather battered sofa in his apartment above No.10 he could not help but let a large smile creep across his face. Finally, after thirteen long bloody years Tony was gone. The Leadership was his for the taking, albeit later than previously promised. Now was his chance to truly bring change to Britain and leave a real legacy in British politics. It was time for a society of justice, equality prosperity and happiness and he believed he was the man to deliver it.
I mean who else could there be? He thought to himself, I have always been Tony’s natural successor, there has been no question. Milburn? He’s too wrapped up with his own life. Straw? Hardly up to the job. Miliband? Too young. Reid? Too right wing. McDonnell? Too left wing. Peter? He wouldn’t dream of it. Would he?
Brown brushed off the thought and got up from the sofa. He walked across the room and picked up the phone. After just the first ring there was an answer.
“Hello?” said the voice.
“Jack! It’s Gordon, just wanted to make sure I could count on your support.”
