The Kaiser's Coup

Kaiser Wilhelm, exiled in the Netherlands, grew to mistrust Hitler after 1934, and he highly disaproved of many of his actions after. There were still Royalists in Germany during the 1930's. Is it possible for a coup to be performed by royalists who seek to return the Kaiser to the throne? If this were to happen, when might it happen, or when would it be the best time? How might the Kaiser returning to power be viewed by the rest of the world?

It might be possible on a prolonged small scale, but part of Hitler's rise was based on smashing other potential revolutions; Monarchist, Communist, other fascist, ETC.

oversized mustaches and helmets with a spiky points come back in style? j/k

Since I have no idea the strength and influence of the German royalists, I have no idea if they would succeed by any margin. I believe much of Germany despised the Kaiser, and would not support such a coup; thus allowing the Nazis to put it down. Maybe if they allied with the German resistance? (if it even existed in any sort of organized manner at all at this point in history)

From what I understand the Monarchy was still beloved by a good deal of people; really though the only viable way for this to happen is if Hitler either loosened his grip or was quickly overthrown before he can actually fix anything.

I could see the Kaiser being invited back as a figurehead to help legitimize a conservative military coup against Hitler, but I'm having trouble coming up with a good POD. I've heard that there were plans for a military coup if France contested the 1936 remilitarization of the Rhineland, but the immediate aftermath of French troops chasing the Wehrmach off an area of German soil would probably be the least auspicious possible moment for reinstating the Kaiser.

Probably the best time would be in the 1920's. At this point Hitler would have lacked a strong enough power base to be a threat. Britain would not act to prevent the Kaiser from coming back to power and as a result France would be unwilling to go it alone, President Hindenburg could have also done it. The chances for a restoration of the monarchy fades with a strong chance in 1938 if the western allies had stood up to Hitler and a tiny chance in 1944 with the July 29th plot. Of course then it would have had to have been Louis Frederick not his grandfather Wilhelm II.
