The Joy of Mapping

There used to be this site called stampworldhistory.com, while it focused on stamps, it featured maps of the areas of the stamps that were fairly detailed; especially the African colonies. I saved these maps and a few months later the site shut down.

So naturally, having used these maps dozens of times, I felt it was wrong for only me to have access to them and posted the on my Deviantart. This got me thinking that I have many maps similar to this that could be potentially helpful or interesting to other map makers.

After deciding to post these, I realized I didn't want to flood the historic map thread or my deviantart with these, so I've decided to post these maps here in this thread. To avoid always bumping this thread, I'll only update it once a day with a varying amount of maps [usually 2-5].

[Also I lack a lot of information on the context of some of these maps, so if I violate anything, let me know and I'll take it down; additionally, I have over 1000 maps from the David Rumsey Map Collection I would e willing to post, but could use clarification of the copyrights of those maps]

With all that out of the way, let's get started with the Joy of Mapping!

French Indochina ~1888, showing the border with Laos under Siamese control.

Argentina as of 1862, with appropriate territories and states as well as various 19th century border disputes.

Armenia and various claims and border disputes.

Same as above but with Azerbaijan

Same as previous two but with Georgia.

Back at it again with the Joy of Mapping, this time with a few British African holdings;

Basutoland, modern Lesotho; one of a very large number of British Colonies in South Africa, however it is one of very few not to join either the Cape Colony nor South Africa. THis map also shows the border prior to 1869.
UNlUlZY.png

Bechuanaland, modern Botswana. The South Part was eventually annexed into the Cape Colony, with the North remained its own protectorate. Also on this map can be seen Stellaland; a protectorate if the South African Republic [Transvaal] that the British annexed into British Bechuanaland.

British East Africa [Modern Kenya] & Uganda. This map is helpful for the various changes in Uganda's borders from 1902-1914; it also displays the border of the Kenya Protectorate.

Back at it again with the Joy of Mapping, there aren't as many interesting maps this time, but they have some good disputes either way.
uF17wuQ.png

British Guyana, with the typical Suriname and Venezuelan claims, but also with the various lesser known historic claims of the British.
MH1marj.png

The Brazil map is not as detailed as I would like as it does not include either the Riograndense Republic, nor Pernambuco. It does contain the Sao Paulo State however; additionally it has many disputes with the relevant years.
Tgwrtfl.png

Bolvia showing just how much they claimed and lost. This map features quite a large variety of disputed claims between Bolivia and Chile, Paraguay, and Brazil.

The map they had for British Honduras [modern Belize] weirds me out. Both because it doesn't show the British extreme claims in Izabal and the Bay Islands, but also because of the weird border for pre-1859 Belize. It also doesn't include the Guatemalan claim to the territory.

Couple issues here:

1. Images posting is limited to THREE Per DAY.

2. You should not be posting the work of others, which by the way these maps are described, these seem to be, without the express permission of the original authors.

Threadclosed.
