The Italian Women

I was just reading "The Italian Women" by Plaidy and it got me thinking.

If Catherine de' Medici died during the reign of her son King Francis II how would the future of France pan out.

Francis II would still, probs, die leaving his widow (Mary, Queen of Scotland) however when Charles came to the throne there wouldn't be the dominant personaliy of his mother behind it.

Can we think who would?

The Guise's still? The Bourbons? Or somebody else?

Also how would this effect the cause of the Huguenot?

If Catherine dies earlier it will certainly change subsequent events - but it is not so obvious what direction the changes go in. She gets blamed for everything because she is the only famous wicked queen who is never imagined as sexy, but things might have been worse if it were just straight out Guises versus Bourbons.
