My dear Fletcher, I believe that you have doomed me.

Seeing the dystopian hell hole your turning my homeland into, I think that you've possibly killed my grandfather, or exiled him to America. And considering that my other grandfather was from the Republican stronghold of the Longlands, I dare not consider his fate. :( ;)

Either way, chances of me being born a slim. Though maybe through a twist of fate, my parents might survive and meet, and maybe even have me. I could end up an American

They stay in Scotland as per otl. I have little else to add.

I would hardly have thought "as per OTL". Leaving aside the oil issue for a moment and the fact that the northern islands recorded the largest no votes in the 1979 referendum (almost 3:1 against devolution, which implies they probably voted no to independence in the aTL as well), I would have thought that, in terms of political precedent, the islands would be looking more and more towards their neighbours in the Faroes as an example of how much they should be governed by the mainland (i.e. hardly at all). Especially as the oil means they can afford it.

More Scotland's Catalonia than Cornwall, I would have thought. I agree that the islands wouldn't have immediately jumped, but I would have thought, especially after the oil started flowing, you would start to see an increasing "if you, why not us?" sentiment developing, especially in the Shetlands.

I've had a timeline where Northern Ireland is moving into a totally shaky situation, where Scotland is independent and where Thatcher has lost before she becomes Prime Minister. The main thing that has been mentioned is something I have not gone into detail over, the Northern Isles. I have to admit being hugely dissapointed by this.

Cumbria, as I have stated several times, I have relatives up there. I have discussed politics with them. This is no holiday/pub thing, I am talking from conversations with folk from the islands. They have never mentioned it. Or are we talkiing about some imagined rise in nationalism?

I also dispute the hostility to the Scots. As I stated, they are bloody Scots. They worship at the Church of Scotland, they cheer on Scotland during football games(trust me on this one). There is an element of nationalism, but not in any organised way.

I'm on the verge of jacking this in. Its like a Nazi Europe getting sidelined by an independent Andorra debate.

Why have you stolen all this from another site and passed it off as your own? http://www.scottishunionist.com/2008/09/independence-for-shetland.html

Fact of the matter is that those who are motivated to post about Shetland independence are going to be those supportive of such a move, and therefore misrepresentative of the population as a whole. And an inconclusive poll from 2007 with only 37 votes doesn't show opinion in Shetland in 1974, which is what this timeline deals with. FoS has addressed your concerns, let him draw a line under the matter and move on. It's an interesting timeline, and I want to see more.

Fletcher, any chance of the new Scotish government pushing England into accepting a plebiscite in Berwick?

Thank you. I have to admit I am getting tired of this discussion.

It is an interesting timeline and I would like to see more too.
No one is stopping him.

Just a doubt about this part:

The final bill of the year of the new Scottish Parliament was brought about by the Scottish Conservatives in an attempt to be more nationalist than the SNP, they proposed that upon the death of the Queen, any future King or Queen of Scotland must be a citizen of Scotland, and that furthermore the current heir should be declared regent. This passed Parliament narrowly, passing into law by a single vote. The Duke of Fife thus became Regent of Scotland.

Does it mean that the future monarch needs to be born in Scotland, or could he just get the citizenship? Was any member of the royal family at that time born in Scotland? Of course, I assume that one of the Windsors (or close relatives) would move to there in order to keep the kingdom within the family, but I wonder who would be.

You didn't present the link from which it was taken.

You didn't [ QUOTE ] [ /QUOTE ] it.

You didn't put it in " "

I call that passing it off as your own.

The Chief of Shetland didn't make those remarks.

There is no Chief of Shetland, Sandy Clueness is just a member of the council.

At the time, Princess Margaret was born in Scotland (Glamis Castle), and was 6th in line to the throne.

Just be a citizen of Scotland. The Duke of Fife is the highest Scottish peer in the line of succession, although born in London he would undoubtedly take Scottish citizenship. I considered Princess Margaret, who was born in Scotland, but this would mean her going against the Queen and I doubt this would happen.

Hence me going down the line a bit.

Things may be about to get worse...;)

Welcome to the Wild North.
