Throughout the US' first century the main focus was about reaching the pacific and retaining a country sea to sea.
What if California up to BC was early on locked up by Great Britain and there was no real tangible way of the US retaining a pacific base on the continent?
How would that have affected the US focus and growth into the the 19th century?
