The High Crusade

Has anyone read this fun, old romp? It's about a bunch of medieval knights and their serfs conquering a galactic empire. It's a bit silly, and not in keeping witht oday's INEVITABLE GRIMDARK, but a good read. And it has a delightful moment where the Englishmen accept that aliens are real, since hey, centaurs exist, so why not other weird talking beings?

I've only seen the TV adaptation, which I found funny but I understand is regarded as terrible by people who have read the book. It probably overdoes the silliness side I think.

It is silly and unbelievable, but I have to say I enjoyed it when I read it. I have always been a fan of Poul Anderson.

Wait... How did an Anderson novel escape my notice?

This injustice must be rectified. TO THE LIBRARY! *whoosh*

Yes, the English did have a lot of luck in that novel. But it did a good job of illustrating that, just because a society isn't technologically advanced, it doesn't mean that the people are stupid.

Cheers,
Nigel.

I like it. It's probably one of Anderson's more lighthearted works. (OK, maybe not quite so much as the Hoka stories...)

I think it's tremendous fun. I like the priest (whose name I unfortunately forget?) especially; and how the aliens assume these Englishmen just love camping - because does any other explanation really make sense!?

And let's not forget the later short story "Quest" set in the same universe, where the Holy Grail suddenly appears... ;) :D

I read it about thirty years ago, and remember that it was quite original. Even technological unsophisticates can win through...

One of my favourite books! Very clever and funny.

I've never seen the adaptation but I've heard it missed the point entirely.
