It was during a cold winter day on 13 december 902 that the fate of of englaland was decided: a battle between the west saxons comanded by king Ædward, and the the danes of east englia under the comand of king Eric was fought in the fens at a place known only as "holme''.
after his father king Alfred had died in 899 Ædward succeeded him. but there was a rival, Æthelwold, son of Alfred's elder brother king Æthelred.
Æthelwold claimed he was the rightfull king. He revolted against Ædward as soon as ædward became king.
the revolt failed and æthelwold fled and recieved shelter in northumbria. In 902 he raided wessex and mercia and retreated into east anglia. In retaliation toh the raid Ædward had invaded east englia.
King eric fought him at "holme'' and killed Edward.(1)
