Also, by the 1980's, incredible amounts of damage had been done to North Korean agriculture. While it doesn't necessarily rule out the growth (implausible enough as it is), it makes the takeover even more unreal with making North Korea another Japan with complete dependence on imports.

The kind of growth your talking about would be hard enough in a good economy, let alone in one where both the US and China tank.
