The Great Compromising President

Well, Texas annexation was a done deal, but unlike Polk, Clay might have accepted the Neuces River as the boundary with Mexico. It could butterfly away the Mexican-American War.

The Whig platform favored high tariffs, internal improvements, and a central bank. The party also favored keeping slavery out of the territories and the president being limited to a single term.

Since the country wasn't as polarized in 1844 as in 1860, there's a chance Clay can get at least some of this without a Civil War.
