The fate of Austria-Hungary in a CP victorious world.

You know there is a movement to rehabilitate the historical reputation of the Austro-Hungarian empire.

I am not sure it is as broad as the force for Ottoman or indeed Tsarist Empire rehabilitation but it's definitely there.

That's why I don't think a collapse is inevitable. But if the CP don't win until 1918 I think it's too late. Up until around the Brusilov offensive I think the situation is retrievable.

It's still going to be rough, though.

I dunno; if the war ends in 1918, then it's obvious that any post-AH states will end up as Germany puppets. I would think this would check the indepenence movemention among some people, like the Czechs.

Would you rather be an independent country that is a puppet of Germany, or a subordinate province of an empire that is a puppet of Germany?

Your estimation on survival sounds about right.

Would you rather be an independent country that is a puppet of Germany, or a subordinate province of an empire that is a puppet of Germany?

That's not much of a choice, I think I'd prefer the Prussians to be one more step removed. Austria-Hungary might flower postwar of course, maybe.

If I were to wax imaginative I might think that somebody in Austria would think of a latter-day diplomatic revolution and alignment with France.

Maybe there would have been a semi-autonomous proto-Yugoslavia within the empire? Something to keep the south slavs relatively happy while holding AH together? Or would this just encourage the Czechs to push for more autonomy?

If Serbia has been crushed, I think it would be fairly easy for the Hapsburgs to play the various South Slavs against each other and Bulgaria to prevent any kind of union. There needs to be a strong center of gravity for a Yugoslav entity to develop, and in a CP victory this will not be the case.

I think another big issue is Poland. The Poles were a critical group in maintaining German-Magyar supremacy in the empire, but the Poles supported the Hapsburgs as the lesser of evils. If there is a potential Poland, they will gravitate toward that.

Even without all that, the Czechs will present a problem, but not one that really has any potential to tear apart the empire so long as the army is strong and Germany supportive.

But this all underlines that A-H isn't really a Great Power anymore - it's a junior partner of Germany.

Austria- Hungary would need an immediate restructuring to survive, therefor I am sure the Czechs, the Croatians the poles etc. would get some autonomy. As I said in an earlier post the Habsburgs would have been forced to award all the nationalities that fought for the Empire during the war.

I once read over Franz Ferdinand had an idea to attempt to implement a 'United States of Greater Austria,' essentially turning the former empire into a parliamentary democracy.

This 'un, or something like it. Here's the map:

Interesting how it doesn't include Bosnia.
