The Fall A Post Nuclear War Timeline.

Most of the earth lay dead now empty quiet that only shows the scars of the hell that was brought upon it. If you looked upon the earth now with new eyes that didn’t remember the war you would have sworn that hell had upon up and all of its legions had laid waste upon the earth. In a way you would be right hell had come to this world, but not from supernatural devil no a devil much to real...man.

In the year 2014, the worst war mankind had ever brought upon this world was started the war lasted only three days, but killed more people than any war in history. As the dust settles over half a billion people are dead, in a cruel twist of fate the first launch was caused by a computer glitch. No one knows who shot frist no ones cares, they are few people alive who could even think, but one thing was on their mind survival. Yet as the months and years goes by man has found even more reasons to kill each other, as the once great race of humanity has been reduced to a shadow of itself fighting of the scrapes of the world that was.

The Blast
In the middle of the busy week day in America schools full with children, busy offices rushed by papers moving back and forth email being sent to co worker, petty conversations was had talk of one’s children or family was shared around the water fountains. In the Capitol lobbyists lobbied the politicians worked on their bills, the President was being informed by what was happing in Ukraine whole boarding Air Force one to go read to a group of elementary school students. A woman in a zoo with her baby holding a ballon smiled at her little darling angle as she gave him the red ballon.
Some where in the world a man half a sleep was only woken up by a beeping of a Not on his screen he open up one eye to see what it was. He sprung alive and looked at it with eagle like eyes somethings was out there they were coming from some one red.Hundreds of them about to hit major cities and bases. His buddy was gone somewhere and he had to make the decision to launch...

By the time what had happened was figured out it was to late. The other side responded in kind launching their own weapons over the nest three days more of their allies would lunch their own nukes at each and then turn on their allies in a orgy of death and destruction never seen before. 500 hundred million are dead before the first week is over with. The war come to the end not because of a victory or stalemate or defeat it ended because they had nothing left to fight with no manpower no body to launch the rest of the weapons. The survivors thank their gods for letting them live, but soon many of them well ask for death as the fallout began to on fold as winter sets in.

By the time what had happened was figured out it was to late. The other side responded in kind launching their own weapons over the nest three days more of their allies would lunch their own nukes at each and then turn on their allies in a orgy of death and destruction never seen before. Ten billion are dead before the first week is over with. The war come to the end not because of a victory or stalemate or defeat it ended because they had nothing left to fight with no manpower no body to launch the rest of the weapons. Maybe 3 billion is a little to high don’t really know tho.

Retired are warheads awaiting dismantling.
The others self explanatory.
Average warhead size isn't what it used to be, the huge megaton citybusters long since retired, and then the distribution between counterforce and countervalue to me, means very difficult to get billions dead on Day One

So maybe a few hundred million die from the blasts?

Crawl Out Through the fallout.
Those who survived the end of the world come to realized it wasn’t so, but only the end of the world as they new it. New York, LA, Tokyo, Moscow, London, New Delhi, Islamabad, Beijing and many more. Central and eastern Europe are effectively gone thousands of years of history ended. The Midwest once the breed basket of the world now it slowly lay dead fields on fire from nuclear strikes. Millions are trapped in collapsed building as flames licks at their heels. No one is their to save them no government no police, no fire fighters, only death waited on them. The not so badly burned and the one who could walked thousands of what was left of cites walked and walked on the highway and roads which lead out of the ruined hell scapes no one could drive the roads in the city had been jammed with abandoned cars. So the hoards of humanity walked and limped down the road leaving everything behind.

LA was mostly destroyed although some parts still remain not glass, Beverly Hills and Belair at first counted their blessing until they saw the fire on the horizon a great storm of hell and fire grew and grew marching it way to their door steps. They through the ruin streets with hopes of surviving most found their way to what remained of the ghetto where they where met with angry faces of looter gangs and raiders. The violence started again conflict seemed to always find a way to go on. Just as it was about to reach it peak the sky open up and out came black rain washing away the fire. This thick black rain and the wind that followed this was not a sign of hope, but that of death and unknown invisible threat now have covered the earth seeking into everything and ash the black snow and ash fell so did the body of the little healthy. A new death have cam upon the earth her name...radiation sickness...

Intensity is inversely proportional to the square of the distance.
Meaning, that if a warhead detonates twice as close, it has 4 times the intensity.
Plenty enough to kill a billion plus.

Like I said, the Megaton sized warheads are long gone

Again, all depends on targeting, Counterforce means the Russians are blasting Montana,

the USA is hitting these areas

And after all that, is to stop the ability to do Countervalue targeting, Cities and production targets.

Then you have everybody else. UK and France aren't using their Boomers(only 1/3rd on patrol, at most) until there is impact on their territory,
and who is launching onto China?

Pakistan and India are a special case, they are only looking at each other.
China has a policy of few weapons being ready for use, most Warheads are in depot storage

Given 2014 deployment it's actually really hard to accidentally start a Nuclear War that kills over a billion people. It's not 1984 anymore, with tens of thousands of Warheads on a hair trigger.

I think this TL seems insanely pessimistic for a nuclear war TL, like as if both the USA and Russia have their nuclear stockpiles at the same amount as in the 1980's.

Just don’t see it. Stanislav didn’t launch in 1983 after detecting 4 launches. Command centers aren’t manned by just a single person who sleeps and then decides everything. Would bet that no country on the planet allows a single person to decide to use nuclear weapons. The US certainly doesn’t. Like Stanislav said, why would the other side launch just 1(in this case, 4 in his). First strikes you launch everything. The tension in the world in 2014 is nothing compared to the height of the Cold War. Maybe you could have Putin get mad and launch or something like that.

It’s not just the US and Russia everyone launches almost everything at each other it’s a complete cluster fuck.

Cursed earth
As the black rain dropped so did the people of the earth. The fallout from the collective nuclear arsenals of the world had cursed it. The ash from the war and fires had blocked the sun from the view of who was ever left on earth. Plants began to wither and die all over the world temperatures dropped. Snow and ash rain down radiations upon the soil making many places unable to grow food for years, but their where another maybe even greater threat looming over parts of the world. Men had not only used the power of atom for war, it had also used it for the creation of energy and power plants that now sits abandoned or half destroyed by the war...

Ticking Time Bomb
for the most part around the world the fail safes in nuclear reactor stop any major events. This was help by the small amount of nuclear reactors around the world due to fears of nuclear energy at lest in the west....
The one of largest being the complete melt down at a Chinese nuclear reactor which was partly damage by a nuclear bomb began to go into melt down along with no one to stop it this was compounded by nuclear power plants in some ex soviet countries as well
as Russia melting down as well. This was the worst case scenario the poison from rads from the melt downs in some cases were much worse than the fallout of the bombs leaving large parts of Eurasia largely unsuited for farming many people reverted mobile hunter gatherer life style similar to their ancestors.

Eurasian “Step men” hunters ridding across the vast plans 2023.
Although in America there were a ticking time bomb waiting on them a snow well soon fall and the winter will come.
